Introduction

Lets go on a Fraction Hunt! Fractions, like numbers, are
everywhere; you just need to learn where to look. Before our
journey, you will learn all about the characteristics of fractions.
Youll learn the parts of a fraction, how to identify a fraction,
and the several ways fractions camouflage (represent)
themselves. Then should know enough about fractions to hunt
them down on your own!

Come and get
me!
The Task

Learn about fractions:

What are the parts of a fraction?
What makes a fraction a fraction?
What are different ways to represent a fraction?

Use this information to find fractions in real life and present them to
the class.

Ideas:
Bring in a food (teacher must be notified BEFORE you bring anything in)
-Divided into parts or explain fractions used in the recipe
Bring in a collection of things
-Present a discrete model of similar items; classify them into groups, part of
the whole
Compare length
-Part compared to a whole
Other Ideas?

The Process

1) Once at an individual computer, view the Fractions Are Parts video.
Click this link: http://mathantics.com/index.php/section/lesson/FractionsAreParts

2) Then read through this quick What Are Fractions? article.
Click this link: http://www.coolmath4kids.com/fractions/fractions-01-what-are-they-01.html

3) Using what youve just learned, experiment with Fraction Models.
Click this link: http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3519

4) Keep the tab on Narrow Range. Explore moving the numerator slider greater than and less
than the denominator. What do you observe?

5) Change the lower right menu from Length to Set. Now try experimenting. What do you
observe? How it this representation different than the other?

6) Now go on to VisualFractions.com. Review the different representations of fractions.

7) Are you ready to hunt for fractions? Here is a link to review vocabulary:
http://www.math.com/school/subject1/lessons/S1U4L1GL.html

8) Keep an eye out for fractions you see at home, at school, at the park, etc. Gather items, take
pictures, etc. Prepare to explain the fractions youve found; present and share them with the
class!

Evaluation
For this presentation you must identify:
What fraction is being represented
The parts and the whole of the fraction
Use vocabulary!

Conclusion

Now that you have learned the basic characteristics of
fractions, identified these fractions, and hunted them down, be
prepared to see even wilder, crazier fractions. Mixed fractions
and improper fractions, oh my!
