Introduction to Art Scope and Sequence

Course Description
Students will apply the elements and principles of design, organize visual content, and develop skills
in the use of tools and materials to produce two and three-dimensional works of art.

Goal #1
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the Elements and Principles of Design through a
finished project.

Skills Practice- Elements of Art Packet (3 Weeks)
Video/Reading activity (1 day)
Project - Elements of Art (3 Weeks)

Criteria/Rubric
Focus on the directions and objectives to complete the project - 15%
Elements and Principles of Art- Demonstrates FORM with the Elements of Art. Demonstrates
knowledge of the Principles of Art - 50%.
Proper use of media, materials, skills, and application of technique- Handling of pencil/color
pencil. Layering and blending 20%.
Presentation of final product- Craftsmanship and neatness are demonstrated - 15%.

Goal #2
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of color theory by completing a color theory assignment.

Skills Practice- Color Theory (1-2 Days)
Project - Color Theory Worksheets (2 Weeks)

Criteria/Rubric
Focus on the directions and objectives to complete the project - 15%.
Demonstrate knowledge of color theory- Produce primary, secondary, and intermediate colors
to create a color wheel - 20%.
Demonstrate knowledge of color theory- Identify and create standard color schemes - 20%.
Demonstrate knowledge of color theory- Produce tints, shades, and tones - 30%.
Presentation of final product- Craftsmanship and neatness are demonstrated - 15%.

Goal #3
Students will demonstrate knowledge of painting processes to produce a finished painting.

Skills Practice- Review artists/art history and painting techniques (1 Week)
Project - Painting (3 Weeks)

Criteria/Rubric
Focus on the directions and objectives to complete the project - 15%.
Demonstrate proper techniques in painting- Students will use appropriate techniques of
transparent/opaque media in a finished painting - 30%.
Demonstrate proper techniques in painting- Students will use demonstrate mastery of
smooth/texture technique in a finished painting - 40%.
Presentation of final product- Craftsmanship and neatness are demonstrated - 15%.

Goal #4
Students will apply knowledge of basic drawing processes to produce a finished drawing.

Skills Practice- 3 Sketches (2 Weeks)
Introduce new media (2 Days)
Project - Observational drawing(s) (2 Weeks)

Criteria/Rubric
Focus on the directions and objectives to complete the project - 15%.
Demonstrate proper techniques in drawing- Foreshortening, proportions, space (foreground,
middle, and background), form, and balance - 40%.
Proper use of media, materials, skills, and application of technique- Use line to define shape.
Use shading to show volume - 30%.
Presentation of final product- Craftsmanship and neatness are demonstrated - 15%.

Goal #5
Students will utilize knowledge of structures of the face/head to produce a finished portrait.

Skills Practice- Basic Proportions (2 Weeks)
Video/Reading (1-2 Days)
Project - Portrait (2 Weeks)

Criteria/Rubric
Focus on the directions and objectives to complete the project - 15%.
Demonstrate knowledge of basic proportions and placement of the features of the face.
Produce characteristics of the eye, nose, mouth and ear through a drawing - 50%
Proper use of media, materials, skills, and application of technique- Use line to define shape.
Use shading to show volume - 20%.
Presentation of final product- Craftsmanship and neatness are demonstrated - 15%.


Goal #6
Students will apply knowledge of sculptural processes to a finished sculpture.

Skills Practice- Review artists/art history and sculptural processes
(1 Week)
Project - Design and creation (3 Weeks)

Criteria/Rubric
Focus on the directions and objectives to complete the project - 15%.
Demonstrate proper techniques in sculpture- Students will demonstrate mastery of
(applied/incised/impressed/pierced) decorative techniques - 30%.
Application of design- Students will create a design and apply it as planned in a finished
sculpture - 40%.
Presentation of final product- Craftsmanship and neatness are demonstrated - 15%.

Goal #7
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the printmaking processes to produce a finished print.

Skills Practice- Review artists/art history and printmaking techniques
(1 Week)
Project - Design and creation (3 Weeks)

Criteria/Rubric
Focus on the directions and objectives to complete the project - 15%.
Apply appropriate printmaking techniques to finished prints- Students will demonstrate mastery
of creating a positive/negative image plate for printmaking - 20%.
Demonstrate proper techniques in printmaking- Students will demonstrate mastery of creating
a high/low relief plate for printmaking - 50%.
Presentation of final product- Craftsmanship and neatness are demonstrated - 15%.
