STA2023 ELEMENTARY STATISTICS

TEXT: IntroductoryStatistics by Prem Mann (8th ed.)

THIS COURSE WILL BE COMPLETED BY DECEMBER 5, 2014.

PREREQUISITE: MAT 1033 Intermediate Algebra, but MAC 1105 College Algebra (or higher)
is strongly recommended.

COURSE CONTENT: Topics included will be from Ch. 1-9,13.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The student will:
1. summarize and interpret data using graphs and computation
2. determine probabilities of discrete and continuous random variables
3. use the Central Limit Theorem to relate sample statistics to population parameters
4. determine confidence intervals
5. perform hypothesis testing

OUTCOMES: The student will be able to:
1. make use of technology to organize, acquire, and convey information.
2. apply critical thinking through problem solving.
3. demonstrate mastery of subject matter on quizzes and exams.

ATTENDANCE: Required. You are expected to be on time and prepared for each class meeting.
Absence is not an excuse for anything. It is your responsibility to ascertain
assignments due to absence.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Prior arrangements may be made but it is your responsibility to make
arrangements before an event. An office conference is preferred rather
than e-mail or voice-mail. Plan ahead.

ASSIGNMENTS: Given at each meeting and weekly. Textbook assignments usually will not be
collected for a grade. Computer lessons will be assigned with ample time for
completion. Planned quizzes will be given in class. Expect a quiz each week.
These will be part of your grade. These (lessons and quizzes) will count as 1 exam
grade. No make up unless prior arrangements have been made.

EXAMS: There will be 3 exams and a final. Missed exams will receive a zero grade. Make-up
exams, if considered, will be at the discretion of the instructor.

GRADING: Your grade will be determined by your average on the exams and other work
evaluated. The usual grading scale will apply: Average > 90% = A, 80%-89% = B,
70%-79% = C, 60%-69% = D, Average < 60% = F
Student initiated withdrawal by Nov. 6 = W
For I or Instructor Withdrawal consideration, student must have substantial reason
and have passing grade at time of request.

STUDY HABITS/RESOURCES: Study mathematics everyday. Do not delay. Do not overload
yourself. When questions arise consider classroom questions, office conference, ASC, form a
study group, Wileyplus, refer to other texts, but do not wait. Use a notebook for your problems
and exercises. Office conferences are encouraged. You will need a scientific calculator.



CHEATING: This will not be tolerated. If you are guilty of this you will receive a zero for that paper.
You may receive an F in the course and may be taken before the Academic Review Board
for possible dismissal from IRSC.

The use of cell phones is prohibited during class at IRSC. All cell phones
must be set on silent or off during the class period. Any student who uses a
cell phone to make or answer a call, or send and read text messages or
emails, other than IRSC emergency messages during class time may be
asked to leave and may be considered absent for that class. No student has
the right to disturb the teaching and learning process.

COMPUTER PROGRAM- WileyPlus:

All new textbooks come with an access code for the WileyPlus computer
component of this course. After registering for the course (instructor will provide
a URL web address in order for you to access the registration form), you will
create a logon and password for the program.

Each time you wish to open the program you will need to go to
www.wileyplus.com, enter your logon and password, and find the Chapter
Quizzes within the Assignments area. A quiz for each chapter will be assigned,
20 points per quiz. Three tries. 50% after due date.

These points along with in class quizzes will account for 20% of your grade.
