Math Lesson Plan

Title: Learning Shapes with the use of Laban movements

Math Topic: Learning Shapes (Circle, Rectangle, Square, Triangle)
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Materials: Visuals aids of shapes, recorded music
Objectives:
Students will be able to recognize and identify four different shapes with the use of
musical movements. Students will recreate the movement with the respecting shape to the
class.
Standards:
TEKs:
111.12. Mathematics, Kindergarten
(K.9) Geometry and Spatial reasoning: The student recognizes attributed of two- and
three-dimensional geometric figures. The student is expected to:
(C) Describe, identify, and compare circles, triangles, rectangles, and
squares.
Procedures:
First, the teacher will be explaining what the students are going to be learning.
o We are going to be learning the following shapes: the circle, rectangle, square
and triangle. Students will be learning the number of sides and corners from each
shape as well as how to draw it in the air.
o From these particular shapes, students will practice to identify each shape with
objects used in our daily life.
Secondly, the teacher will create a movement activity in where the student will
practice each of the shapes.
o Students will be creating shapes with their body for each of the shapes
learned.
o During the activity students will be demonstrating the Laban movements
such as continues flow, time quick, space direct, and time slow.
Lastly, the teacher will direct a game in which it includes the learned topics of
movements and shapes.
o Before the teacher will provide specific directions in where it shows the
different movements for each particular shape.
o During the game students will get to demonstrate different movements
related to objects that are designed as the shapes learned.
o The game will include figures of the shapes learned, all forming a circle
on the ground. Students will dance around the circle along with a recorded
song. When the music is stopped, students will have the chance to
demonstrate the specific movement corresponding to the shape.
Assessment:
The teaching of the shapes attributes will take about 8 minutes. Then the teacher
will take about 7 minutes to demonstrate with the kids the Laban movement for
each shape.
When finishing with the Laban movement activity the students will then have 20
minutes to play the musical shape movement game.
At the end of the lesson and activities the teacher will then ask questions to the
students to review the shapes learned. Such questions are:
o Can someone tell me how many sides does a triangle have?
o How many corners does a square have?
o What kind of movement did the rectangle showed? Was it a robot, a ball,
or a flag?
o How did you feel when doing these movements?
o How did you move your body?
