Setting: YMCA Who you observed: Camp Counselor (Jeremy)

Childrens age range: Grades 3-5

FIELD NOTES
1. Describe the content of the lesson that you observed.

Students were asked questions about the continents and countries of the world. When a
question was answered wrong, one of the camp counselors was pied in the face.

There were questions about: the size of continents and countries, major rivers, oceans,
hemispheres, etc.

2. Describe the instructional strategy or strategies (e. g., cooperative learning, peer
tutoring, think alouds) that were utilized in the teaching of those concepts.

This would be considered a large group lesson. The entire group was trying to figure out
the answer in the allotted amount of time so that their counselor did not receive a face full
of shaving cream. Students were not supposed to work together to help each other answer
the questions, so this would not be a cooperative learning exercise.

3. Please describe if and how the teacher utilized the following during the lesson: models,
the arts, and technology.

The teacher did not utilize models, arts, or technology for this lesson. He did find the
questions and answers online, but the use of technology was not included with the group.
However, counselors are encouraged not to use technology with the students, so this could
be why he did not incorporate technology with the students. However, this lesson could
have been improved by adding a chart with the questions on it for students with disabilities
and visual learners.

4. Describe the assessment strategies that the teacher used to assess the content
knowledge of the student. These assessments might be formative or summative.

The assessment consisted of a punishment when the student answered the question
incorrectly. The students did not want to answer questions incorrectly because they didnt
want to be responsible for their counselor getting pied (although it was just for fun and it
was enjoyable when this happened). This would be considered a formative assessment
because the assessment was used to plan future lessons.

Take notes on student engagement. Pick several students to look at over the course of the
lesson.

Student one: This student was very attentive to the other questions trying to prepare for
what his might be.

Student two: This student was trying to help the other students to answer their questions
as well as his own so that the counselor would not get pied.

Student three: This student was originally interested, but quickly stopped paying attention
after his question.

Student four: This student was not interested in answering any questions and did not want
to participate. I believe he did not want to be responsible for missing any questions.
