Learning Styles
Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand. This
comes from a Chinese proverb that many different learners may be able to relate to. For me,
learning that I am a kinesthetic learner really puts this quote into perspective. A kinesthetic
learner learns best through hands-on approach, actively exploring the physical world around
them (Koch, 2009). This would be the way that many people in the world as well as how I learn.
When studying, I will take notes on the subject to help me to remember and understand what I
am trying to learn. In class I tend to be involved in activities to help me learn best. In math
classes I like it when the teacher demonstrates a mathematical problem so I can learn how to do
that particular math problem in the future. Being involved really helps me to understand what I
need to learn.
There are many other people in the world who learn differently. This would relate to the
theory of multiple intelligences, which states, that each of us is intelligent in several different
ways. These intelligences have been posted into nine different types of learning created by
Howard Gardner. In the nine intelligences my strong point would be the Interpersonal
Intelligence. This type of person has the capacity to understand other peoples moods,
intentions, motivations, etc. The book says the educators fall into this category, which made me
feel as if teaching is the right field for me. In this intelligence, I fell as if an Existential and
Linguistic Intelligence would be my weakness. The list includes: Naturalist Intelligence (Nature
Smart), Musical Intelligence (Musical Smart), Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
(Number/Reasoning Smart), Existential Intelligence, Interpersonal Intelligence (People Smart),
Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence (Body Smart), Linguistic Intelligence (Word Smart), Intra-
personal Intelligence (Self Smart), and Spatial Intelligence (Picture Smart).

When it comes to being a teacher, our main goal is to educate the students in or
classroom. If a teacher only uses one learning style in the classroom, there will be students who
will not understand the knowledge as fast as others. Different people have different learning
styles. These are three different styles that include: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. As
I have said before, I am a kinesthetic learner. I would not want to teach my classroom in just this
type of learning style, but use every learning style and have many different approaches to
teaching a topic. In that way every student in the classroom will have the ability to learn the way
they do best. Students can fall behind if a teacher is not aware of the different learning styles
that their students attain.
To conclude, it is very important that people understand their preference to learning.
When you know the way you learn best, it will help you to further your understandings of the
topics you are trying to learn. Not only must the student know the way that they learn, but a
teacher must know how to incorporate all different learning styles and intelligences into the daily
classroom. Once all of this is done, a classroom can become a place where everyone can
understand what the teacher has to offer. Learning the different styles is important to future
teachers to understand as well. I am sure that I will take a kinesthetic approach to learning how
to do so.
