PESTLE Analysis
3.1 Definition
PESTLE analysis, which is sometimes referred as PEST analysis is a concept in
marketing principles. PESTLE is a mnemonic which in its expanded form denotes P for
Political, E for Economic, S for Social, T for Technological, L for Legal and E for
Environmental. It gives a birds eye view of the whole environment from many different angles
that one wants to check and keep a track of while contemplating on a certain idea/plan. The
PESTLE analysis of Abdul Monem Limited (AML) is discussed briefly below-
3.2 Political Factors
Though Abdul Monem Limited is a business organization, it has to think about the
political factors before taking their business decisions. Bangladesh is a country of Unitary
parliamentary democracy. But the political environment here is sometime very hostile to
business. As there has always been no co-operation between the ruling party and the opposition
parties sometime the country has to face strikes and business, trade and commerce have to come
to a standstill position. Again, the political views of the different governments are always
different here. So, Abdul Monem Limited has to cope with every government change. As their
business deals with the construction sector, a lot of contracts are signed with the government. So,
there is always a possibility of bills not have been passed or the contracts have been laid off.
Overall, AML has to keep good contact with the government and the opposition parties to
operate their business.
3.3 Economical Factors
Business decisions are always have been affected by economical factors. Bangladesh is a
developing country. Abdul Monem Limited has to evaluate the economical factors before
finalizing the business decisions. For example, they have to evaluate their annual turnover rate
and their loan bearing capacity before applying to a financial organization or bank for loan. They
9
also have to think about the inflation rate and economic condition of the country, the dues
pending from the contractual works and the debts to the banks and other financial organizations.
3.4 Social Factors
Now a days, every organization has to give importance to the social factors to operate the
business. Abdul Monem Limited also has to think about the society. Cause, the business of
business today is not only business but also social business. They have to think several times
before taking a decision as the decision may go against the society or the culture and people may
have opposed it. A good business always depended on socio-cultural factors.
3.5 Technological Factors
Abdul Monem Limited has introduced new technologies in their construction, production
and even in the management level because in todays world technology plays a major factor. A
good swing can come in the business and the performance of the work, products and employees
increase in quality and quantity by the introduction of new technologies. AML also has to think
about the negative aspects also. Cause, maintenance and training cost are also big factors.
3.6 Legal Factors
Now a days, every business has to face legal approaches. AML has to follow the strict
labor law of Bangladesh. A contract may be cancelled if there is a single illegal approach during
conducting business. Anti corruption or corruption free business practice is always preferable
where as in our country its sometime not feasible. But there are always legal approaches for
corruption acts.
3.7 Environmental Factors
The business at present days has to think of the mother nature or the environment.
Every business is moving forward to green technology for the sake of the environment. Or
every business is thinking of how to decrease the harmful effects on the ecology or the
environment. AML has installed Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) to make the water pollutant
free before discharging into the environment. They have also installed solar energy plant at
the roof of their corporate head office.

4.1 Changes In the Business Organization And Their Effects on Business
Environment
Over the last five years (2008-2012) Abdul Monem Limited has taken some initiatives
and changes have come within the internal and external environment of the organization. In these
five years the group of companies has launched a pharmaceutical company, separated a unit from
the construction division & converting it to another company and has taken enormous decisions
for the organization which has changed the organization internally and externally and affected the
business environment to a great extent. These changes in the business organization and their
effects on business environment have been discussed below.
4.1.1 Establishment of a New Pharmaceutical Company
On September 8, 2010 Abdul Monem Limited launched a new pharmaceutical company
for commercial operation named NOVUS Pharmaceuticals Limited. With an annual turnover of
around Tk 800 crore, Abdul Monem Group thought about entering the pharmaceuticals sector in
2005 and established AM Pharmaceuticals Ltd that failed eventually. Later, Monem Group
purchased Novus from Pharmadesh Laboratories Ltd in May 2008 and began developing the
factory. nitially, the company has invested nearly Tk 30 crore to set up the factory and import
state-of-the-art machinery at Hemayetpur in Savar. They got a building infrastructure with
minimum facilities from Pharmadesh. They had to work over the two years to make it a factory
of international standards. They imported machinery from UK, Germany, Japan, China and
India,In addition, they established a strong research and development (R&D) department, which
will ensure standards that meet the Current Good Manufacturing Practices criteria set by the
World Health Organisation (WHO).
Novus had entered the sector at a time when most of the top 10 revenue earning
pharmaceutical companies are increasing production capacities to meet growing demand.
Industry insiders said greater public health awareness and investment boosted the sector, sett ing
11
a new benchmark for turnover every year. Initially, the company had aimed to produce primary
and chronic health care items, which includes paracetamol and omeprazol, to reach out to the
common people.
4.1.2 Separating An Unit & Renaming It To Another Company
Abdul Monem Limited is the flagship company. It is the construction unit of the
organization and started its journey 57 years ago as a civil engineering and building contractor
and within a short span of time become a trusted name, ultimately a synonym of quality,
reliability & commitment. The construction division had launched a Asphalt and Ready Mix
Concrete in 2009 for the demand in the ready mix concrete and hot mix asphalt industry. There
are other 10-12 ready mix concrete companies in the market but no asphalt company except the
Abdul Monems. Regarding this fact and other situations, the construction division separated this
unit from the division and renamed it Abdul Monem Asphalt and Ready Mix Concrete Limited
in 2012. Since then the company is competing with other ready mix concrete companies and
playing a monopoly role in the hot mix asphalt industry.
4.1.3 Business Decisions Taken Within The Organization And Their Effects
Within these five years (2008-2012) the organization has undertaken some decisions to
enhance the performance of the employees and the organization itself. In fact, the company

their support and commitment to the Ten Principles of the UNGCs Global Compact as regards
to human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption in the year 2012.

Advisory Services) audit at plant areas and the process of getting certified. OHSAS
recommends and creates a healthy, safe and supportive environment at plant areas with strict
obligation for appointing child labor in the organizations.

competitive employments are encouraged and any discrimination in respect of race, gender,
