An effective educator is one that is well aware and concise of the current change
in the not only education but in the new generation of students, new technology and their
considerable effects on education. An effective educator is also one who is willing to
accept these changes and effects and willing to work with them and not against them.
This is the most important trait that an effective educator in the 21st century could have.
The ways of yesterday will not work with the new generation of students.
Aside from that most important trait there are other traits an educator must have
to be effective. An educator who is knowledgeable not only about the content he or she is
teaching but the students he or she is educating. Knowing their students so well that they
can come up with similarities and differences amongst them as far as learning styles,
abilities and interests. All of these transfer into great lesson planning, appropriate
modifications, and effective teaching.
Also when an educator stays informed and know their content they become the
epicenter of information that passes it right along to their eager scholars. Aside from
those obvious traits just mentioned there is also one last and even more important trait of
an effective educator. That trait is compassion. An educator holds a very important role in
the lives of students. If an educator is not genuinely sympathetic as well as epithetic and
tender he or she will never affect the lives of young children or teens. This to me tends to
be the hardest to accomplish. Educators of today are bombarded with so many other tasks
that take them away from the real reason they came into teaching. It takes a super teacher
to accomplish all of the above, and I do believe there are millions of super teachers out
there who fulfill their every duty, every day and plan to do so for the rest of their

careers.
A person who embodied a genuine effective educator was my fifth grade teacher.
She was in her third year of teaching when I came into her fifth grade classroom. I was a
special case in every sense of the word. This woman not only took the time to help me
academically but also emotionally which in turn helped me socially. She went above and
beyond to help me. She saw my potential and fought to help me realize it. From making
school interesting to extra tutoring and even taking me out to a movie she managed to
transform me. She was like no other teacher I had ever had.
This person not only inspired me to be an educator my self but also inspired me to
be the type of person who is really here to help others not matter the case. I am not sure
where her will and strength came from but she is my inspiration to continue to pass the
love she gave to me. The only way I can do so is through the love and trust I have in the
lord to use me as his servant to touch the lives of the much needed. Only through him
will I be able to have the strength on a daily basis to be that difference in the lives of
students who so desperately need it.
When asked the question of how do you measure students success I
automatically think of assessments. Although there are many forms of assessments like,
formative, summative and checks for understanding, this in fact is just one way of
measuring students success. I believe that it can also be measured by the teachers ability
to teach not only the content but the types of students. It can also be measured by the
parents involvement and the value they hold for education and lastly it can be measured
by the students motivation to succeed. True success is first helping a child realize the

importance and power of knowledge and lastly teaching them to apply it.
Children are now in contact with more information than ever before. Children
today are more knowledgeable than any other generation before at their age. They are
part of a whole new generation that is well informed about the past, present and future.
So where does the teacher fall into this picture? A teacher is now a facilitator more than
ever before. A teacher has to take advantage of the availability of information to students
to continue to teach children how to use this availability of information to continue
develop. Most importantly it is the teacher part to teach students how to put this wealth of
information to greater use.
Technology has changed our way of living in every sense of the word because it
has opened up the entire world and made it available to everyone and anyone. Back in the
day the teacher was the source of all knowledge. If a child learned something new it was
because his or her teacher had presented that new information and passed on their
knowledge. Now children are able to attain all sorts of information with just a click away.
This has changed teaching and learning in schools dramatically. Children are teaching
themselves what they are interested in learning and in a way they prefer to learn. They
come into school and are being taught something they might not be necessarily interested
in and in a way that they do not care to learn in.
My goal for this degree is to be an effective teacher for this new generation. I
need to be knowledgeable of the immense amount of tools available to me and continue
to learn about the new and improved tools. Not only do I plan on learning how to use
these tools but now to implement them to enhance the content I teach as well as the

learning. I also plan to learn about this new generation of children who have grown up in
this world of technology. These are not the same students of the past they are completely
different in the way they process information, gather information and even talk. Just like
the students have changed teaching needs to change. My goal is to be able to effectively
teach this new generation of students. An aspect of technology that I would love to
master is the hardware aspect of it. I have worked in many schools and seen many
teachers loose interest in using technology because they do not know how to fix
something. They blow it off by saying that technology is never reliable. I believe it is,
with a basic knowledge of hardware I think a teacher is fully equipped to implement
technology on a daily basis and not let little things keep them from using it
continuously.
On a more personal level, I feel that I will gain more knowledge about teaching
in general which in turn will make me feel more capable of teaching. I feel that I will
learn many new skills that actually apply and work for this generation of learners. I will
learn how to implement them to enhance my teaching. This gives me a sense of ability to
work with something so new and so relevant.
