Diverse Learning Considerations
ELL students: In order to support ELL learners, it is important to be aware of the Five Stages of Language Acquisition, and to attune
your instruction to that stage. General consideration need to include speaking clearly and at an appropriate pace, offering
collaborative activities that give ample opportunity for interaction among peers, emphasize visuals ,and teach both domain specific
and Tier 2 vocabulary.
Other diverse learners: There are supplemental texts and multimedia resources to both challenge learners, and support learners
who need greater scaffolding. You will need to adjust the pace of instruction and of the gradual release of responsibility for both the
high achieving and struggling learners.
General instructional considerations for struggling learners include speaking clearly and at an appropriate pace, offering
collaborative activities that give ample opportunity for interaction among peers, emphasize visuals, and teach both domain specific
and Tier 2 vocabulary.
