Course Description: In this course, students will be introduced to a variety of art media to build a basic foundation and understanding of the art elements and principles of design. Students will build upon prior knowledge with an emphasis placed on understanding and appreciating art from other times and cultures. Students are exposed to concepts and movements within art history as they conceptualize and create personal projects. Students will analyze their performance, and evaluate selected historical art work and styles. Lessons are focused on engaging a student's imagination, enhancing their critical thinking skills, and developing technical and perceptual skills.
Course Overview
6 th Grade 1 st 6 weeks: Identify elements of art in specific works of art, and explain how they are used. Create works of art that employ the elements of art, as well as a variety of art mediums and application methods.
2 nd 6 weeks: : Identify principles of design in specific works of art, and explain how they are used. Create works of art that employ the principles of design, as well as a variety of art mediums and application methods.
3 rd 6 weeks: Identify common and distinctive characteristics of artworks from diverse cultural and historical eras of visual art, and experiment with various compositional approaches influenced by these styles.
4 th 6 weeks: Analyze the social, historical, and political impact of artists on culture and the impact of culture on the arts.
5 th 6 weeks: Create works of art that are based on observations from the environment that illustrate how art is part of everyday life. Illustrate themes from direct observation, personal experience, and traditional events.
6 th 6 weeks: Careers in art.

Class Supply List: 1 sketchbook (5.5in x 8.5in or larger one is fine) 1- eraser (white) 1- 12 ruler 1- spiral notebook 1 sharpener 1 pk of markers 1 box of colored pencils 1 box of crayons
Homework and Testing: Any incomplete class work will be given for Homework Monday thru Thursday. Tests will be Fridays. (Schedule may change for unforeseeable circumstances.) Retesting will take place upon student failure on a major assessment administered during a six weeks grading period. Six Weeks Tests and Semester Exams do not qualify for retesting. Retesting must occur within (10) days and may raise the score only to a maximum of (70) only if they score between 90 and 100.
Final Grade: First Semester average 50% Second Semester average 50%
Make-Up Work: When a student is absent, he/she must make arrangements for make-up work on the day they return to school. The teacher and student can decide when the work is due. 2014-2015 Course Syllabus for 6th Grade Art
Late Work: If the student does not turn in an assignment on the date it is due, he/she will have 1 opportunity to turn it in on the next day for a maximum of a 70.
Cheating: Cheating is interpreted as a procedure which involves the unauthorized giving or receiving help, offering or seeking aid, or the use of material prepared in advance for use on an assessment. Cheating also involves books, notes or technology in any form being used during an examination without the permission of the teacher. The penalty is a zero (0) on that work, and a failure for the semester (which will be recorded as a zero (0) in the teachers grade book) if cheating occurs a second time during the same semester.
