problem? Do all decision problems require research? Explain and illustrate with examples.
Differences

What should be done to increase the consumers of
organic food products in the domestic market?
What is the awareness and purchase intention of
health conscious consumers for organic food
products?
How to reduce turnover rates in the
BPO sector?
What is the impact of shift duties on work
exhaustion and turnover intentions of the BPO
employees?

Q.NO.2.

How are research designs classified? What are the distinguishing features of each? Differentiate by
giving appropriate examples.
Meaning of Research designs
Classification and features
Differences
Examples
ANS.

Meaning of Research designs

Once you have established the what of the study, i.e., the research problem, the next step is the how
of the study, which specifies the method of achieving the research objectives. In other words, this is the
research design.

Classification and features

Q.NO.3

Discuss with the help of examples the four key levels of measurement. What mathematical
operations/statistical techniques are and are not permissible on data from each type of scale?

`
Meaning of Measurement scales
Types of Measurement scales with examples
Mathematical operations/statistical techniques

ANS.

a. Meaning of Measurement scales and types of Measurement scales with examples

The term measurement means assigning numbers or some other symbols to the characteristics of
certain objects. When numbers are used, the researcher must have a rule for assigning a number to an
observation in a way that provides an accurate description. We do not measure the object but some
characteristics of it.

Q.NO.4.

Processing of data involves editing, coding, classifying and tabulating. Explain each of these steps by
taking an appropriate example.
Explanation
Examples
ANS.

Data Editing

Data editing is the process that involves detecting and correcting errors (logical inconsistencies) in data.
After collection, the data is subjected to processing. Processing requires that the researcher must go
over all the raw data forms and check them for errors.

The significance of validation becomes more important in the following cases:
Q.NO.5.

Distinguish between the following:
a. Null hypothesis and Alternative hypothesis
b. One tailed and two tailed tests
c. Type I and Type II error
d. One way and two way analysis of variance
e. Descriptive and inferential analysis of data

ANS.

a. Null hypothesis and Alternative hypothesis

`
Null hypothesis: The hypotheses that are proposed with the intent of receiving a rejection for them are
called null hypotheses. This requires that we hypothesize the opposite of what is desired to be proved A
null hypothesis is denoted by H0.

Q.NO.6.

a. What is Chi-square test of goodness of fit? What precautions are necessary while applying this test?
Point out its role in business decision making.
b. Two research workers classified some people in income groups on the basis of sampling studies.
Their results are as follow:

Investigators Income groups Total
Poor Middle Rich
A 160 30 10 200
B 140 120 40 300
Total 300 150 50 500
Show that the sampling technique of atleast one research worker is defective.

ANS.

Meaning

A goodness of fit test is a statistical test of how well the observed data supports the assumption about
the distribution of a population. The test also examines that how well an assumed distribution fits the
data. Many a times, the researcher assumes that the sample is drawn from a normal or any other
distribution of interest. A test of how normal or any other distribution fits a given data may be of some
interest.

Q.NO.1.

Case Study: New Age Constructions

`
New Age is a building construction organisation based in Bangalore. The organisation, which was
established in the year 2005, is relatively new in this sector. The activities of the organisation are
limited to Bangalore. There are a number of well-established builders in Bangalore. Therefore, initially
New Age found it difficult to obtain large projects and undertook only small building projects.
However, recently, New Age has got a lucrative contract for building a large shopping mall. The
organisation finds the contract to be a stepping stone of its future success. Therefore, it is striving to
deliver the project on time and within the planned budget. The organisation has hired Mr. Sinha as
the project manager.
To carry out the assigned project, Mr. Sinha has emphasised on three principles of project
management including the principle of project strategy, the principle of team building, and the
principle of satisfaction. During the project, Mr. Sinha communicated the relevant project information
to all the team members. However, he did not prioritise maintaining a thorough documentation of the
entire project.
Seven months into the project, Mr. Sinha faced some major issues. He was asked by the management
of the organisation to provide a complete project report on a day-to-day basis. Moreover, it was also
noticed that he used some extra human resource, which affected the projects cost management as
well. Mr. Sinha did not even consider the triple constraints of the project

Questions:
a. As a project manager of New Age, which knowledge areas and principles would you like to follow
the most?
b. Do you think considering the triple constraints would have helped Mr. Sinha? Justify your answer.

Summarise the various knowledge areas and principles in brief you would follow as a project
manager of New Age
Give your opinion if triple constraints would have helped Mr. Sinha
Provide justification for the opinion
ANS.

Summarise the various knowledge areas and principles in brief you would follow as a project
manager of New Age

To be a successful project manager, one need to have some basic qualities and principal which will help
the project to execute properly. The basic qualities I am talking about is mentioned below. Without
these its not possible to complete the project on time at all. These are:-
of project strategy, the principle of team building, and the principle of satisfaction.

Q.NO.2.

Describe the five phases of a generic project lifecycle.
Describe each phase of a project lifecycle
ANS.

Describe each phase of a project lifecycle

project

`
Q.NO.3.

Write short notes on:
Work breakdown structure
Product line analysis
Capital rationing
Challenges in Social Cost Benefit Analysis (SCBA)

ANS.

Work breakdown structure

This process divides the major project deliverables and project work into smaller, more manageable
components. The scope statement is the input to this process. Creating the Work Breakdown Structure
(WBS) improves the accuracy of cost, time and resource estimations. The success or failure of a project
is largely determined by the degree of clarity in the scope statement, based on which the WBS is
generated.

Q.NO.4.

How would you classify the sources of financing infrastructure projects?
State the meaning of source of finance,
Explain the external and domestic sources of finance available in infrastructure financing.

success of the business. Therefore, it is important that you understand the various sources of finance
Q.NO.5.

Discuss the types of project termination with suitable examples

ANS.

Discuss the types of project termination with suitable examples

A project can be said to be terminated when work on the substance of the project has ceased or slowed
to the point that further progress is no longer possible. There are four fundamentally different ways to
close out a project: extinction, addition, integration, and starvation.

Termination by Extinction:

`
Q.NO.6.

Explain what is done in each step of the process of designing a monitoring system

ANS.

Explain what is done in each step of the process of designing a monitoring system
Monitoring and controlling consists of those processes performed to observe project execution so that
potential problems can be identified in a timely manner and corrective action can be taken, when
necessary, to control the execution of the project. The key benefit is that project performance is
observed and measured regularly to identify variances from the project management plan.

Pure project management organization

A "pure project organization" is a model of a business where project managers have total control over
the project they oversee. Central control at the managerial level must be weak for this to occur. Put
simply, a "pure project organization" might also be termed a "task force." In the case of a "pure project,"
the leader of this task force would have to be given total authority for a limited period to solve a
particular problem. In business, it is a great challenge to find an example of such purity.

A collective bargaining process generally consists of four types of activities- distributive bargaining,
integrative bargaining, attitudinal restructuring and intra-organizational bargaining.

Distributive bargaining: In distributive bargaining, one partys gain is another partys loss. This is
most commonly explained in terms of a pie. Disputants can work together to make the pie
bigger, so there is enough for both of them to have as much as they want, or they can focus on
cutting the pie up, trying to get as much as they can for themselves. In general, distributive
bargaining tends to be more competitive.
