Textbook and Materials: On Level text: Mathematics Course 2, Prentice Hall (Replacement Cost $71.97).
Advanced Level/TAG text: Course 3, Holt (Replacement Cost $54.95)
Students should report to class on time with all materials every day. This includes a spiral notebook, 3-ring binder (1
or inch), 2 sharpened pencils, and an eraser. Throughout the school year supplies will need to be replenished.
Topics & Timeline
Operations with Rational Numbers 6 weeks
Students extend addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to all rational numbers, maintaining the properties of
operations and the relationships between addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division.

Expressions and Equations 6 weeks
Students build on their understanding of order of operations and properties of operations to manipulate and problem solve
using expressions, equations, and inequalities. Students transition from single-step problem situations into multi-step problem
solving opportunities involving equations and inequalities.

Ratios and Proportional Reasoning 6 weeks
Students use their understanding of ratios and proportionality to solve a wide variety of percent problems and solve problems
about scale drawings. Students graph proportional relationships and understand the unit rate informally as a measure of the
steepness of the related line, called the slope. They distinguish proportional relationships from other relationships.

Geometry 4 weeks
Students continue their work with problems involving the area and circumference of a circle; area of triangles, quadrilaterals,
and composite shapes; and surface area of three-dimensional figures. Additionally, students reason about relationships among
two-dimensional figures using scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and they gain familiarity with the
relationships between angles formed by intersecting lines.

Probability 4 weeks
Grade 7 is the introduction to the formal study of probability. Through multiple experiences, students begin to understand the
probability of chance (simple and compound), develop and use sample spaces, compare experimental and theoretical
probabilities, develop and use graphical organizers, and use information from simulations for predictions.

Inferences 4 weeks
In this unit, students use data to make inferences about populations. In Grade 7, students move from concentrating on analysis
of data to the production of data. Students develop an understanding that good answers to statistical questions depend upon a
good plan for collecting data relevant to the questions of interest. Students learn to differentiate between the variability in a
random sample and the variability found in a computer model or simulation.

Standards of Mathematical Practice
In addition to the information covered in class, students will spend the year using the eight Standards of Mathematical Practice
(SMP) established by the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards. The eight practices are:
SMP 1: Make sense of problems and persevere in
solving them.
SMP 2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
SMP 3: Construct viable arguments and critique the
reasoning of others.
SMP 4: Model with mathematics.
SMP 5: Use appropriate tools strategically.
SMP 6: Attend to precision.
SMP 7: Look for and make use of structure.
SMP 8: Look for and express regularity in repeated
reasoning.

Absence/Make-Up Procedure:
Assignments missed because of excused absences are due 2 class meetings upon the students return to class. It is
the responsibility of the student to ask for missed assignments and to schedule makeup sessions with the instructor
for missed quizzes/tests within 1 week of returning to school.

Homework:
Homework will be assigned daily. Evaluation of homework may consist of detailed grading, generalized checking,
or a combination of both techniques. For full credit homework must be completed in pencil and all work shown.

Tutorial:
Tutorial will be available for all students interested in getting extra help or for enrichment. Tutorial is by
appointment only. Parents must provide transportation. Students must be picked up on time. Failing students
must attend and you must sign up by Friday to attend the following Monday.

Teacher/Parent Communication:
An open line of communication is encouraged between teachers and parents. Email communication is likely to
receive the fastest response. Conferences may be scheduled by contacting wilsonr1@fultonschools.org.

Recovery:
Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work
required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course
requirements including attendance. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating
circumstances may improve their grades. (FCBOE Procedure IHA)

Grading Procedure:
The final grade in this class will be determined by using the following weights for each category:
Tests 20% Quizzes 20%
Projects 10% Class work 20%
Homework 15% Participation 15%

Discipline Guidelines:
Students in this class are expected to adhere to the rules and policies of Sandtown Middle School and Fulton County
as stated in the SMS Student Handbook/Agenda and the Fulton County Guidelines for Student Behavior.

Procedures & Expectations:
At Sandtown Middle School, we believe that every student has the right to learn and that every teacher has the right
to teach. To this end, students will be expected to be responsible, be prepared, be respectful, be cooperative,
and give your best effort every day!
