Clarks Grade 5/6 Class


September Newsletter


Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. I am excited to
start off another great school year. Please watch for a monthly newsletter at
the beginning of every month in your childs red folder.

Language Arts:
The Grade 5s and 6s will be focusing on various reading and writing activities throughout
the year. We will be using Barbara Maricondas narrative and expository writing resources.
We will also focus on daily journal writing, handwriting, reading comprehension activities,
vocabulary, as well as various novel studies throughout the year.

Science:
In Science the Grade 5s and 6s will begin their Trees and Forests unit. In this unit they
will:
Identify reasons why trees and forests are valued. Students meeting this
expectation should be aware that forests serve as habitat for a variety of living
things and are important to human needs for recreation, for raw materials and the
a life-supporting environment
Describe kinds of plants and animals found living on, under and among trees; and
identify how trees affect and are affected by those living things
Describe the role of trees in nutrient cycles and in the production of oxygen
Identify general characteristics that distinguish trees from other plants, and
characteristics that distinguish deciduous from coniferous trees
Identify characteristics of trees (coniferous and deciduous) found in the local
environment
Interpret the growth pattern of a young tree by examining the growth rings and
distinguishing the growth from year to year.

Social:
In Social we will be starting off with a small Mapping Skills unit. In this unit the students
will become familiar with reading maps, giving directions, hemispheres, etc. We will focus on
this unit for the month of September.
Math 5:
The Grade 5s will continue to use the Jump Math program. We will begin working in the
first book, which is a review of math concepts learned in Grade 4.


Math 6:
The Grade 6s will continue to use the Jump Math program. We will begin working in the
first book, which is a review of math concepts learned in Grade 5.



Virtue of the Month: Service


Reminders:
Weekly Home Reading Logs are due every Wednesday.
Please remember to check and initial your childs agenda every night. Important
reminders and notes will always be written in agendas.
Please write a note in your childs agenda if he/she will be going home for lunch
that day.
Red Folders go home every Wednesday. Please return every Thursday.
