The teacher will begin the unit dressed
up in a Governors costume gaining the
students attention and addressing the
theme. The focus text will be used to
show the children what they will be
learning over the next few weeks, this
is followed by a word wall to
summarise and show meaning to the
text that was read.

Through the use of the focus text,
various resources such as internet
search and information non-fiction
book the first fleet. This provided
students with the information needed
to contribute to the following activities.

and engage students in the topic unit. It

as students can reflect on the book and
gain further understanding as this can

Although the focus text was used quite
often during this unit a printed text
(book) the first fleet was also used to
help inform readers on certain aspects
of the events occurred during the first
fleet. That book was called the first fleet
a new beginning in an old land. Digital
texts were also utilised throughout this
unit for creating letters, timelines and
