Schmidt Hammer Test
The Schmidt Hammer test, also known as the rebound hammer test, tests the Surface Hardness and
Penetration Resistance of concrete. It works by measuring the rebound of the spring-loaded hammer, when
impacting against the surface of the concrete sample. It is a non-destructive test which can help to estimate
the compressive strength of concrete, unlike the more direct concrete cube making and crushing and
concrete core drilling and crushing. However it has its limitations; using the Schmidt hammer testing is
classed as indirect, as it does not give a direct measurement of the strength of the material. It simply gives
an indication based on surface properties, so its only suitable for making comparisons between samples. It
is also sensitive to variations in a sample, so its the procedure to take a range of readings and calculate the
average reading. The test can be conducted horizontally, vertically or at intermediate angles, but calibrations
are required for differing angles.
Origins of the Schmidt Hammer Test
The Schmidt hammer was invented by Ernst Schmidt in 1948 and has been made in Germany by Schmidt &
Partner . In the US however, it is more commonly known as a Rebound Hammer Test.
Schmidt Hammer Testing Regulation
The Schmidt hammer test method for testing concrete is governed
by the European standard BSEN 12504-2 and International standard
ASTM C805
Rebound Hammer:consisting of a spring- loaded steel
hammer which, when released, strikes a steel plunger in
contact with the concrete surface. The rebound distance of
the steel hammer from the steel plunger shall be measured
on a linear scale attached to the frame of the instrument.
