BY: DEV DESAI AND SRISRUJAN PENIKELAPATI PERIOD 4 SCIENCE AND PERIOD 7 COMPUTER SCIENCE ISSUE Oil spills is an environmental problem which occurs when a ship out at sea brows up and leaks petroleum in to the sea This is an issue because many people each time an oil spill occurs argue on what to do solve it It is also argued on even drilling for oil. When the ships hull is not thick enough, when an explosion aboard the oil rig occurs, the oil will leak through easily.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION An oil spill is the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially marine areas, due to human activity, and is a form of pollution. The term is usually applied to marine oil spills, where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters, but spills may also occur on land. Oil spills may be due to releases of crude oil from tankers, offshore platforms, drilling rigs and wells, as well as spills of refined petroleum products (such as gasoline, diesel) and their by-products, heavier fuels used by large ships such as bunker fuel, or the spill of any oily refuse or waste oil. Major oil spills include: Exxon Valdez oil spill, 1989 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, 2010 STAKEHOLDERS Players/Positions Beliefs Value Tony Hayward, Chief Executive Officer of British-Petroleum Agree
Tony Hayward is a successful businessman because he gets money from getting drilling oil. He wouldnt disagree due to the fact he gets money from this Economical Local and Federal Government Authorities Disagree Authorities say no because they are afraid that if oil is spilled, marine wildlife will be damaged the chemicals that seep out of the oil will harm humans health Ecological/Health & Safety
Local Residents and workers Agree Some of the local workers that live near the coast will get their salary from drilling oil, and they would say no when offshore drilling is stopped because they get their money from this. Locals will also basically have their own oil supply when oil is drilled near them. Economical/Health and Safety Elizabeth M. Young Elizabeth M. Young (Disagrees with oil spills). It is important to always inspect for deterioration, leaks and decay, in all equipment. This should be done on an annual basis. On the boat vessel, check to see that all the fuel lines and hoses are still in good condition and that all of the seals are connected tightly. Also, improve technology to help prevent crashes which is already at a start. Global Positioning Systems (aka GPS) help prevent collisions and groundings. Ecological RESEARCH QUESTIONS
To what extent should oil be drilled from the sea?

BP OIL SPILL Took place in the Gulf of Mexico near Mississippi River Delta, United States Spill date: 20 April 15 July 2010 Cause: Wellhead blowout Casualties: 11 dead Operator: Transocean under contract for BP
ACTION PLAN Our action plan to consult political leaders (governors, attorney generals) and get their opinion on a local oil spill. We have chose to consult Mississippis government, which includes governor Phil Bryant and attorney general Jim Hood. The BP oil spill took place close to Mississippi, and the political leaders had to take action on helping clean the Gulf of Mexico. SAMPLING TECHNIQUE We have chosen to get 70 copies of our survey and divide half and half. Divided among randomly chosen parents of math science kids and math science kids. Which have been distributed to the kids and their parents. Here is our graph: INSTRUMENT Our instrument is a mix of a questionnaire and an opinionnare. 6 questionnaires and one opinionnare.
RAW DATA Our raw data includes the two groups of people, which are parents of math science kids and math science kids. GRAPH ON QUESTIONS 1 0 0.5 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.5 4 4.5 5 Question Category 2 Category 3 Category 4 Chart Title Column1 Series 2 Series 3 HOW COULD WE HAVE MADE THIS MORE SCIENTIFIC? To make this project more scientific we could have actually visited a person or company who knows a lot about oil spills. We also could have visited places at which oil spills actually happened. Lastly, if we did a survey about how people feel about oil spills which happened near them like the BP oil spill. We could have gotten both people who live close and away from actual oil spills.
