Welcome to October
Our interests this month will be Fall, Thanksgiving and Halloween.
ALLERGY ALERT!!!
We have students in our school with life-threatening allergies to peanuts! Please do not send products with these ingredients.
Please keep this in mind when preparing snacks for the children. We need to keep all of our children safe. Thank you!

Curriculum Focus
Language Arts
In Language Arts this month we will be doing poetry, chanting, listening, reading, speaking, and singing. We will be reading books
to match our interests. We have begun the Jolly Phonics program. The Jolly Phonics program is a major part of our Language
Arts focus this year. Letters are taught in a specific order, so that they can be combined to form many simple words. The first
letter group we will be working on is S-A-T-I-P-N. During the week the students will participate in Language centers to reinforce
the letter sound of the week. To prepare for the upcoming week, students will be bringing home a printing sheet in their Jolly
Phonics notebook which parents can help complete. On the back will be the songs that we will be singing here at school to go
with the given letter.

Mystery Sharing has begun in conjunction with Jolly Phonics. Please review your Mystery Share Schedule for your childs day. The
children are to bring something beginning with the letter of the week along with 3 clues to describe the item.

Math and Science
We will be reviewing shapes. We will be chanting days of the week, months of the year, counting, recognizing and printing
numbers to 5. We will be looking at similarities and differences in apples and pumpkins. We will be going on a trip to Millers
Farm on October 17
th
.

Social Studies / Health
We will be discussing fire safety. We will be discussing keeping safe during the exciting season of Halloween. To celebrate Oct. 31
we will be having a class party. Parents will be notified of their snack responsibilities. Children may wear a costume on that day as
we will do a special school parade.

Physical Education
Our class will have physical education in the Gym and outside every week. We will be experiencing movement activities, creative
dance, fitness and game situations that promote fun rather than competition. There is no special gym equipment required, except
for indoor running shoes.

Library
Our class will have Library day on Tuesdays. Please return borrowed books by Monday so that the children will have the
opportunity to take out a new book.


Homework Tips for Parents
1. Please watch your childs backpack for Jolly Phonics letter of the week on Fridays and complete it together.

2. Review colours and shapes. The students will enjoy mixing primary colours together to create secondary colours at our
painting station soon .You can do this by mixing paint, play clay or layering crayons.

3. Please encourage your child to dress and undress on their own. Practice putting on shoes, jackets, doing up zippers,
buttons and snaps. Celebrate this independence! With colder weather fast approaching, there will soon be more clothes to
put on and take off.

Things Needed

Millers Farm: Please return the Field Trip forms and money as soon as possible. Children who do not submit a signed consent
form may not come on the Field Trip! For those parents who have volunteered to join us, you may all come! Please submit your
$6.00 as soon as possible. There is not going to be room on the bus for any parents, so you will have to meet us at the farm by 9am
please. You are welcome to bring a youngster however, we cannot then put you in charge of a group.

Thank-you to those who have already submitted their All About Me Poster. Please send them in if you have not done so already as
we will begin to present them soon
