AsIbegin,IthankPresidentClintonforhisservicetoournation.AndIthankVicePresidentGoreforacontestconductedwithspirit,andendedwith

Iamhonoredandhumbledtostandhere,wheresomanyofAmericasleadershavecomebeforeme,andsomanywillfollow.
Wehaveaplace,allofus,inalongstoryastorywecontinue,butwhoseendwewillnotsee.Itisthestoryofanewworldthatbecameafriendand

waseverborn.Americansarecalledtoenactthispromiseinourlivesandinourlaws.Andthoughournationhassometimeshalted,andsometimes
delayed,wemustfollownoothercourse.
Throughmuchofthelastcentury,Americasfaithinfreedomanddemocracywasarockinaragingsea.Nowitisaseeduponthewind,takingrootin
manynations.Ourdemocraticfaithismorethanthecreedofourcountry,itistheinbornhopeofourhumanityanidealwecarrybutdonotown,a
trustwebearandpassalong.Andevenafternearly225years,wehavealongwayyettotravel.
Whilemanyofourcitizensprosper,othersdoubtthepromiseeventhejusticeofourowncountry.TheambitionsofsomeAmericansarelimitedby
failingschools,andhiddenprejudice,andthecircumstancesoftheirbirth.Andsometimesourdifferencesrunsodeep,itseemsweshareacontinent,
butnotacountry.
