November arrives with a focus on all things
Better Homes and Gardens

: food, family, fun,

and the home that brings them together.
Early in the month, we soak up the last days
of autumn outdoor living; by the fourth
Thursday, all eyes turn toward the holidays.
For me, Thanksgiving is the perfect
gateway to the holidays. It begins with
bringing the people I love to the table for
a feast thats always familiar, yet never the
same twice. From there, its a long weekend of improvised fun. Why fret a schedule?
Football, shopping, backyard gamesthe less structure, the more we enjoy it all.
The only tricky part is making sure the host-in-chief is able to join in, so this
issue approaches Thanksgiving with a simple philosophy: Keep it relaxed.
Our holiday menu (Early Bird, page 106) fully embraces the virtues of
make-ahead, with dishes that you can prepare weeks in advance and that
are genuinely easy to pull together. Our menu-maker is Faith Durand of
thekitchn.com, who brings a bright, contemporary touch to feast-day favorites.
Serve Up the Best Thanksgiving Weekend (page 55) oers helpfuland
playful ideas for moms and others hosting family for a four-day stretch. Easy
snacks, laid-back games, niceties for guest rooms; weve got it covered.
And for an extra serving of desserts, Joy Wilson, aka Joy the Baker, drops in
with scrumptious pumpkin ideas (Easy Holiday Baking, page 124).
While Ive never completely mastered the art of stress-free hosting, every year
I make progress, as I grant myself permission to keep it a little simpler. To assign
tasks and ask for help. To remember that the real star of the holiday is gratitude.
And at long last to accept that one kind of potatoes is probably enough.
Wishing you a happy and relaxed Thanksgiving.

Recipe for a delicious autumn
afternoon: good friends, a table full
of cheese, and a few crisp ciders to
pair. David Gremmels of Oregons
Rogue Creamery shows us how
to set the scene.
For David Gremmels, local

to drizzle on cheese and the
simple building block for an
easy centerpiece. Tiny jars

PARTY PLAN
A cheese tasting should be

David says. I like to serve two

HOUSE SPECIALTY

mix. Toss hot popcorn with dried
blueberries and cranberries,
a few roasted hazelnuts, and

Table stunner
You cant beat this: a gorgeous centerpiece you can arrange days
before guests arrive, and keep well after theyre gone. Matthew
started with a trip to his local garden shop for ornamental oregano
and kale. He lled a copper planter with well-soaked oral foam,
placed the kale stems rst, then lled in with clusters of oregano,
purple basil, rosemary, and sprigs of viburnum berries. Left as is,
this will dry beautifully over time, Matthew says. Just add fresh
blooms for the occasional punch of color, like right before a party.
Inspired by rich autumn hues and seasonal
plants, event designer Matthew Robbins
whips up a lush, make-ahead centerpiece
for the big day and beyond.

changing
seasons
A couple with a newly empty nest
makes the move to a smaller home
thats comfy-cozy for two,
but still welcomes everyone inside
for warm Sunday suppers.
Touches of nature
thread through this
home, from the
wreath on the front
door to the John Muir
tribute print in this
snug little nook off
the kitchen. When
son Bryan and the
rest of the gang come
over, homeowner
John Toskovich
loves to take a seat
under the branches
and share a story
with granddaughter
Kinzley. A ring of club
chairs in place of a
sofa lets face-to-face
conversation flow.
better homes and gardens | november 2014 | bhg. com 33
Thats what Lynne Toskovich thought
as she and husband John downsized to a
home in the D.C. suburbs.
We wanted the welcoming feel of a
casual beach house, where everyone can
come and go, in a package appropriate
to this area, Lynne says. It couldnt
literally be a beach house plopped down
in the middle of McLean, Virginia.
Thats where designer Lauren Liess
came in. She used natural elements like
seagrass rugs and matchstick shades to
bring in the easy and breezy without
any coastal clichs. Nature also colored
the palette: Blue and white speak to a
seaside look in a soft way, mixed with
sophisticated clay and sand hues, along
with a bit of fresh yellow. Sink-in soft
furnishings invite catching up with a
good bookor each otheron couples
nights, and theyre equally welcoming
to company.
Its our new tradition to have the
kids and grandkids over for Sunday
dinner, Lynne says. While one group
gathers around the kitchen island,
expect a board game to break out in the
living room. This house caters to it all.
Its so laid-back, Liess says. Its a
place where everyone is comfortable.
Every day should be as relaxed
and casual as a day at the beach.
Great natural light
and stay-awhile
furniture make the
living room Lynne
Toskovichs favorite
spot in the house.

A kitchen for two
or the whole family
A VERSATILE ISLAND has work space on one side, barstool seating
on the other. Its Lynne and Johns favorite table for two. But theres
also plenty of room for son Matthew and his wife Noelle, above, to
help Lynne with prep for family dinners. Other times, its a craft and
coloring zone for the grandkids, including little Clive.
A HARDWORKING OFFICE SPOT was high on Lynnes wish list.
Designer Lauren Liess carved a space for command central, right,
from a wall of cabinetry on one side of the kitchen, just outside the
cooking zone. Magnetic chalkboard paint makes it easy for Lynne to
remember when to pick up which kiddo and what she needs to grab
for the Sunday meal. Daughter Amanda likes to help Lynne with the
decorating, too. She renished the vintage chair and made a new
seat cover from an old our sack. Q
The kitchen, left, in
the 10-year-old home
got a facelift with
fresh paint on existing
cabinets, plus new
soapstone counters,
hardware, and
lighting. The office
spot, below, has its
own identity with
white cabinets, rather
than the work zones
blue-gray. Paperwork
is stowed discreetly
behind closed doors
and theres still space
for overflow dishware
and linens.

PUT A GRID
ON IT
A simple,
modern trellis

character of
the garage.
A long list of gotta-haves came to light when
Kim and Trigg Thorstenson envisioned a
dream backyard for their urban Chicago
home. They wanted it all, says landscape
designer Doug Hoerr of Hoerr Schaudt
Landscape Architects, of the 1,800-square-
foot yard. A place for dining, cooking,
hanging out, a re pit, a lawn, plantings,
privacy. That was a tall order for the small
lot, especially because the narrow yard was
anked by a plain metal garage.
Doug walked around our yard with a
can of spray paint and drew a picture of
the familys wish list, Kim says. When he
came to the garage, he saw potential. Hoerr
recommended recasting the structure into a
starring role by changing the at rooine and
sprucing up the facade with wide double doors
and a trellis, which would turn the back of the
building into an inviting second entry. The
plan opened up the small yard to a host of
entertaining possibilities, Hoerr says. For big
gatherings, or in inclement weather, the party
can migrate into the covered space.
Hoerr worked with associate Abigail
Baldwin to divide the rest of the yard into
separate use areasdining, re pit, lounging,
play. The design deliberately uses (and
repeats) a limited palette of materials. Any
more would risk creating chaos. Gravel is
relaxedlike a French park, Hoerr says. Its
also budget-friendly and practical to maintain.
Reclaimed old brick brings in warmth. The
plantings soften and add romance. And the
lawn adds a green focal point.
We love eating outside, Kim says. The
boys (Rome, 11, and Bo, 9) are especially fond
of roasting marshmallows over the re. The
lawn is sized just right for pitching a tent or
tossing a ball. Redesigned for their lives, the
space checks o everything on the familys
backyard bucket list.
A reconfigured
roofline, contrasting
metal trellis, and
Dutch stable doors,
above, transformed a
standard-issue metal
garage into a cool
courtyard asset.

LIVING LARGE IN
A SMALL SPACE
Heres how landscape architects Doug Hoerr and
Abigail Baldwin stretched a tiny city lot.
DIVIDE AND CONQUER Vignettes make a small area
feel bigger. Breaking the landscape down moves the
eye from space to space, Hoerr says.
CREATE ORDER IN THE COURTYARD
A small space has to have order, Hoerr says. In this
design, each area has a purpose, much like rooms in
a house. Changes in surfaces dene areas for dining,
playing, and relaxing.
MINIMIZE MATERIALS We used just four materials:
brick, gravel, sod, and plants, Hoerr says. They
identify yet unify the space.
SOFTEN THE EDGES Hydrangeas planted along
the edges of the yard create a lush wall that keeps
the spaces orderly structure from feeling stark.
Theyre sumptuous, Hoerr says of how the shrubs
overow into the gravel seating area and lawn.

KEEP IT CURRENT Warm
tones of orange can easily
take a retro turn, Emily says.
To keep your orange shades
fresh and modern, pair
with cooler colors like dark
charcoals and deep blues.
IN GOOD COMPANY
To create a larger color
story, use multiple tones of
persimmon rather than one
specic shade. Mixing deeper
and lighter shades helps
tone down the individual
shades and makes it easier
for the eye to understand the
palette as a whole.
STRIKE A BALANCE If
youre attracted to deeper
shades of persimmon, pull
back on the volume of use,
especially if you want your
room to feel bigger. Bring
bold oranges in through
accessories or a rich accent
wall, and use lighter shades
more liberally.

Sure, a beige sofa with bright pillows is
great, designer Karen Bow says. But going
beyond the expected is better. Why not make
your home truly yours? Be brave! Start with
something you love and build.
In this Connecticut home, the beloved
something was a rug. A robins-egg blue and
black rug that Kelly Wheeler couldnt wait
to give an unfurling shove across her dining
room oor.
Turns out, the unfurling was pretty life-
changing. It inspired the ka-pow of color
that threads through every room. Along with
robins-egg, Bow layered in a full range of
blues: ethereal in subway tiles on the kitchen
backsplash, ocean-inspired on the family room
sofa, bright on sunburst mirror frames, inky
on striped draperies.
Theyre dierent shades of blue, but
because theyre all in the same color family,
they work together just like neutrals, Bow
says. They ow.
That owa comfortable, cohesive feel
was vital in this sociable home, designed
with an open oor plan that keeps Kelly, her
husband, and their kids connected, even when
theyre doing their own thing.
A mere pop of color
wasnt going to cut it for
this vibrant family. Their
place is traditional, yes,
but life here is all about
energythe three teens,
two dogs kind of energy.

Heres a twist:
Traditional-style chairs
are black rather than
wood-tone, and the
dining table is clean-
lined, white, and modern.
Nothings too formal, Kelly says. Its
all about being together, having fun. Im glad
Karen pushed me to young it up and go with
fresh design ideas.
The hardest sell? Giving black a big
presence in the palette of blues and classic
neutrals. Karen had to work to convince
me to go with black on the stairway, Kelly
says. Im glad I listened to her. The black
balusters are amazing. And I love how they
tie to the other touches of black, especially
in the dining room.
Black gives the sophistication. It puts an
edge into the pretty, Bow says. It makes a
traditional farmhouse feel modern without
bringing in any industrial elements.
Working together, all the surprising
touches of color give the Wheelers the young
traditional home they wanted. I love all of it,
Kelly says.
And thats one thing about this house
thatsnot surprising, Bow says: I always tell
people Work from your heart, and youll love
it in the end.
WARM FRONT
Natural stone
brings rich sand
tones to the
fireplace surround.
Can you pair white and
beige? Thats the
question people always
ask me, designer Karen
Bow says. As this living
room proves, the answer
is yes. Theyre both
neutrals, so they work
great together. And here,
the hits of blue add life.

GO-TO HUE Simply White
by Benjamin Moore. Thats
the white I used here. There
are no undertones. Its clear,
clean. It moves well with the
time of day.
BEST ADVICE Go old-
school when you plan a
furniture arrangement. Tape
everything out. This house
looked like a furniture crime
scene, but it worked.
Everyone loves a
white kitchen. Begin
there, and then throw
in a surpriseeven if
its just a hint of color in
the backsplash tile.
Karen Bow, designer
A versatile butlers
pantry, left, can be set
up for morning coffee,
evening cocktails, or a
buffet. Its tucked
neatly between the
dining room and the
kitchen, above, where
wenge wood on the
island top continues
the thread of black.
Blue notesand
trafficflow easily
from the kitchen to
the breakfast area
and family room,
opposite. A chandelier
is both traditional
(with a classic shape)
and modern (with a
chrome finish). It adds
sparkle even when
the lights are off.

t
he kitchen remodel in Melissa Michaels Bremerton,
Washington, house wasnt so much about what
she took out; it was about what she brought in:
charm, personality, and one smart x to the oor
plan. It took me a couple of years to realize why the layout
wasnt working, Melissa says. A peninsula that housed the
dishwasher trapped guests and cooks in a corner. We could
not have two people working at the same time, Melissa
says. Turns out that cabinet section gave only the illusion of
usable storage. When Melissa removed the slacker and added
a new cabinet to the right of the sink, she gained great party
ow and six valuable drawers. The new setup inspired her to
remove cabinets from the range and sink walls, adding to the
rooms new airiness. Quartz countertops, a tile backsplash,
and a modest islandall in shades of whitefurther
freshened up the space without requiring reconstruction. In
fact, most of Melissas changes gave the kitchen new style
and function with minimal makeover mess. Here are 10 ways
to update what you have.

check for pests
Before taking any plants indoors,
inspect them for insects that might be
lurking on the leaves. A forceful spray
from your garden hose will knock
most pests o. For large infestations,
apply an insecticidal soap.
2
repot, if needed
Like children, houseplants can
have summer growth spurts. Choose

and add enough fresh potting soil in
the bottom so the plant grows at the
same depth it did before. Untangle

HOW TO GET
SCOUT IT OUT
Spot a woman at your local

Another resource: the
cosmetic counters at your
local department stores,
says Jet Rhys, a salon
owner in San Diego. Those

know whos who in the
industry, she says.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Once you have a few
names, see what local
beauty bloggers and
previous clients are saying
about the stylists and
salons, Rhys says. Yelp and
Citysearch are also rife with
customer reviews.
SET UP A CONSULTATION
Instead of jumping right
into a cut, carve out some
time to see if you mesh with
the stylist, says David
Barron, a salon owner in
Atlanta. Use the time to talk
about your hair history, your
budget, and how much time
you have to devote to
styling. Many salons oer
face time gratis, but some
might charge a small fee.

TALK
THE
TALK
Just a little bit o the ends or long layers might not mean
the same thing to your stylist as it does to you. To head o a
catastrophe, get a handle on the lingo:
Picture-perfect? Not always. Here are the
dos and donts for your pic picks:

DO tear or print out your images. We love
pictures, Rhys says. We dont love having to scroll
through your camera roll or Pinterest boards on
your phoneit cuts into your appointment time.

DONT get caught up in a pretty face. Is it Halle
Berrys haircut that you want, or do you really just
want to look like her? (Who doesnt?) When a client
brings in a picture, Ill put my thumb over the face
and ask, Do you still want this haircut? Barron says.
Sometimes the answer is no.

DO be realistic. If you have curly hair, a sleek bob
is probably not the best cut for you. Choose pictures
of women with a hair type and face shape thats
similar to yours.

DONT expect an exact replica. Your stylist
should tweak the cut so it works for your hair type,
face shape, and lifestyle.
GET A
LAYERED Hair is
snipped at dierent
lengths throughout.
Layers can be long
(below the jawline),
short (aka choppy), or
graduated (stacked on
top of each other).
BLUNT Ends are sliced
straight across, which
can make ne hair
appear thicker.
TEXTURED This can
refer to your hair type
(wavy, curly), or it can
be the result of a cutting
technique that involves
sculpting the ends of the
hair, creating a tousled,
piecey look.
At the salon Dont leave! Give your stylist a
chance to make it right, Rhys says. Or see the
manager or owner, who can make suggestions.
At home If its been two to three days and you
just cant make your new style work, go back
to the salon. Unless youve changed your mind
about the style you asked for, there shouldnt
be an additional charge. Q
WHEN YOURE
NOT HAPPY...
THE LONG PIXIE
Short hair is huge for
fall, Rhys says. She calls
this cropped cut a cross
between a pixie and a
shag: long, full bangs,
but shorter at the sides
and nape.
THE CURLY LOB
Short for long bob, the
lob is already a go-to
look for straight hair, but
is now trending for curls,
says Nunzio Saviano, a
salon owner in NYC. Ask
for a shoulder-length cut
with long layers.
MOST
COVETED
CUTS
A change will do you good. Check out this trio of chops:
FULL-ON FRINGE
This seasons bangs are
longer on the sides than
they are in the center, says
Josu Perez, celebrity
stylist for Rowenta Beauty.
The look is full
but soft.
It happens all too often: You leave the salon
with a swingy mane only to have your hair fall
flat when you attempt to style it on your own.
Make sure you know how to do your do with
these tricks:

Take a video Go ahead, whip out your
smartphone. Record whats going on in the
mirror, Rhys says. Youll get a step-by-step
tutorial to watch in your bathroom.

Go home with the goods We dont
suggest you buy products because were
greedy, she says. We do it because they
work for your look. If you cant swing salon
prices, ask for drugstore picks.

GO-TOs
These new pro-approved formulas

John Frieda Frizz Ease Curl Reviver
Mousse ($7; drugstores) defines
curls without the crunch because
the formula is alcohol-free.
LOral Paris Advanced Haircare
Volume Filler Densifying Gele

Maple Sage Turkey
A rub sprinkled on the turkey a few
days ahead means no more work until
roasting, Faith says. Slip it straight into
the oven and nish it with the glaze.
prep 30 min. chill 4 days
roast 2 hr., 40 min.
1 14-lb. frozen turkey
3 Tbsp. coarse kosher salt
3 Tbsp. maple sugar or
packed brown sugar
1 tsp. dried sage, crushed
1
2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
2 cups hot water

4 cup unsalted butter
4 tsp. nely shredded orange peel
1 tsp. ground chipotle chile pepper
1 tsp. whole black peppercorns
MAKE AHEAD
1. Partially thaw turkey, at least 1 to
2days. (Most of the skin should no longer
be icy and should give to the touch.)
Remove packaging; pat dry.
2. For rub, in a small bowl mix salt, sugar,
sage, and black pepper. Rub evenly over
turkey. Place turkey on a rack in roasting
pan; cover loosely with plastic wrap.
Refrigerate 3 days more or until fully
thawed. Remove plastic wrap the night
before cooking.
3. Preheat oven to 450F. Remove neck and
giblets from turkey. Loop kitchen string
around drumsticks; tie securely to tail.
Pour hot water into roasting pan; transfer
to oven. Reduce heat to 350F. Roast,
uncovered, 2 hours. (If breast browns too
quickly, cover loosely with foil.)
4. For glaze, in a small saucepan heat
maple syrup, butter, orange peel, chipotle,
and peppercorns until warm; whisk
to combine. After 2 hours of roasting,
brush turkey with glaze every 20 minutes
for 40 minutes to 1 hour or until meat
thermometer inserted in thigh (not
touching bone) registers 175F. Remove
from oven. Tent loosely with foil; let stand
15 minutes. Reserve drippings, skimming
fat, for Early Bird Turkey Gravy (right).

2. On a lightly oured work surface dump out dough
mixture. Gently knead into a disk. Wrap in plastic

pan. Fold edges under; crimp with your ngers

least 30 minutes and a maximum of 3 hours.
4. Place rack in center of oven; preheat to 425F.
5. For Filling, in a medium saucepan cook
pumpkin, sugars, spice, and salt over medium
heat until mixture begins to bubble. Cook 5 to
7 minutes, stirring frequently. (Mixture will
become fragrant, and some of the water in the
pumpkin will cook o.)
6. Remove from heat; transfer to a medium bowl.
Stir in heavy cream. Stir in eggs and vanilla;
whisk until thoroughly combined. Transfer
mixture to prepared crust; bake 15 minutes.
Reduce oven to 350F; cook 40 to 50 minutes
more or until pie no longer jiggles in center.
7. Meanwhile, for Pecan Praline Topping, in a
medium saucepan combine brown sugar, butter,
cream, and salt over medium-low heat. Bring
to a simmer; cook 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from
heat; stir in vanilla, pecans, and cranberries, if

low heat until just pourable. Pour praline mixture
over warm pie. (Topping might seem loose,
but will thicken and harden as it cools.) Cool

Family time: Cooking
to foster compassion
When Jill Lewis and her husband, Mike
Capombassis, lived in New York City, they routinely
volunteered with their three kids to cook at a
homeless shelter that made ethnic meals to spice
up the usual soup kitchen fare. When they moved
to Toronto in 2008, they brought the program with
them. Jill and fellow mom Julie Levin cofounded
Kids Cook to Care. Geared to kids ages 6 to 16 and
their parents, KCTC partners with a professional
chef each month to show families how to whip
up global meals (like Moroccan tagine and Italian
bomboloni), which they serve at local shelters.
Our goal was to combine community service
and exposure to dierent cultures, Jill says.
KCTC has been so successful that it now oers
a virtual program available worldwide (e-mail
yum@kidscooktocare.com for info). Yet Jills
biggest triumph has been watching Jack, Lilly,
and Ben learn from their time in the kitchen. Says
Jill: Working with people from all ethnicities
and walks of life has taught my kids that the only
dierence between them and someone whos
struggling is a whole lot of luckno matter where
theyre from. Camille Noe Pagn
A HEALTHIER WAY TO
Order at a restaurant
The average restaurant meal serves
up a whopping 1,327 calories! Follow
these tips from Tamara Melton, R.D.N.,
to dine out without filling out.
DO SOME PREP WORK
Before heading to the restaurant, check
out the menu online. Many list nutritional
information, so you can plan your picks
accordingly. Some healthy-sounding
dishes, like turkey burgers, may contain a
surprising amount of calories, Melton says.
AMP UP THE VEGGIES
Research shows that starting with a salad
can reduce the amount of calories you
consume at the meal by up to 12 percent.
Have a small, veggie-based salad with a
spoonful of vinaigrette (skip croutons,
cheese, and creamy dressing) or substitute
greens for the starch in your entre.
BEWARE OF BUZZWORDS
Fried, smothered, creamy, and crispy
are red ags; they likely mean that a dish is
heavy on oil, butter, or cheese. Stick with
grilled, broiled, or steamed, but ask the
waiter how its prepared. Grilled vegetables
and meats might be nished with a pat of
butter for avor. You can request that they
hold the butter or go light on the oil.
CHOOSE INDULGENCES WISELY
Instead of mindlessly nibbling from
the breadbasket, you can ask the waiter
not to bring it outor stick with one roll.
Cant pass up the molten chocolate cake?
Go ahead and enjoy, but share the
deliciousness with the table.

Sharon Liao
Jill and Mikes kids
Jack, Lilly, and Ben
can cook up a storm.
Lower the thermostat Throw another blanket on your bed, and turn your
thermostat down. Making it 10 to 15 degrees cooler while you sleep can save
5 to 15 percent a year on heating.
Flip the switch on ceiling fans Most have a switch that changes the direction
of air. In winter, you want a fan spinning clockwise on a low setting. This will create
an updraft, which takes the warm air that rises to the ceiling and distributes it
throughout the room.
Check for weather-stripping Even when doors and windows are closed, heat
may be escaping. Close outside doors and windows on a piece of paper. If it can be
pulled through without a tear, then you probably need weather-stripping.
Switch to LED holiday lights Chances are youve started making the switch to
LED bulbs, but what about those holiday lights? Experts estimate that it costs only
27 to 82 to light a 6-foot tree, 12 hours a day for 40 days. Look for a store that
oers a discount for trading in your incandescent lights. Jeanette Pavini

3 new ways to:
Dodge diabetes
In honor of diabetes awareness
month, try these easy tips to
help lower your risk. You might
lose a little weight, too!
ADD PROTEIN TO BREAKFAST
Foods like eggs and yogurt help you
stay fuller longer, and a recent
University of Missouri study found that
the more protein you eat at your a.m.
meal, the better your blood sugar
control. Eggs oer 6 g each; low-fat
yogurt has 12 g per cup; and 2 Tbsp.
of peanut butter gives you 8 g.
KICK UP THE SPICE
Season your dish with oregano
and rosemary, and your taste buds
might not be the only winners. These
herbs contain compounds that might
block a diabetes-related enzyme,
according to a study in the Journal of
Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
PICK UP THE PACE
Recent research reveals that
interval walking is better at controlling
blood sugar than a steady stroll.
During your next walk, try alternating
three minutes of going all-out with ve
minutes of a slower pace.

A buet can be formal or casualyour food
and presentation set the tone, Spungen says.
Pick the site For good tra c ow, a sideboard
is best, but if you dont have one (or if youre
expecting a big crowd), consider setting up on
the kitchen table or island.
Map your surface A stack of plates should go at
the beginning of the line, silverware at the end.
In between, arrange your serving dishes and
platters. Set dishes that have sauces toward the
front to avoid drips falling into other food.
Happy ending Place dishes that might run out
after the more plentiful food. Any hot or warm
dishes (like mashed potatoes or meat) should be
at the end so the food will have less time to cool
down before guests reach their seats.

7- TO 8-YEAR-OLDS While teaching gratitude to younger kids is certainly
important, this is the stage at which your child is really able to understand
the concept on a deeper level. Make being appreciative a part of a childs
every day by making it fun. Start a weekly tradition in which you go around
the dinner table, and each person talks about one thing he appreciated
that day. You can also create a wall of thanks in the kitchen or family
room where everyone can write what theyre thankful for on sticky notes,
thenpost them.
TWEENS At this age, kids tend to be more focused on stu, so your focus
should be on dierentiating between basic needs (clothes) versus privileges
that kids have to earn (the latest designer coat). For example, if your child
decides she wants a video game or second pair of boots, jointly come up
with a schedule of chores to earn money. Or oer a weekly allowance thats
contingent on household responsibilities. This basic process not only helps
children be grateful for what they have, but also helps them develop an
overall appreciation for all the work that enables them to live comfortably.
TEENS Keep the attitude of gratitude going by encouraging teens to come
up with their own ways of expressing thanks. For example, they might post
a photo of something theyre grateful for daily on Instagram, or write one
note of gratitude a day in a journal. At this age, becoming involved in a
cause or volunteer project is an ideal way for kids to turn their appreciation
into action, and experience how showing your gratitude can really
make a dierence.

We live in a 24/7 world, and a hectic
life often translates into less rest,
says Joseph Ojile, M.D., founder and
chief executive o cer of the Clayton
Sleep Institute in St. Louis. But sleep
isnt a luxury you can forgo, and not
getting enough has been linked to just
about every health condition, including
diabetes, hypertension, and depression.
In fact, the ongoing National Health
Interview Survey shows that getting
less than six hours nightly is a risk
factor for heart disease, and several
studies have tied lack of sleep to the
obesity epidemic. Sleep loss directly
impacts your circadian rhythm and
the production of hormones that help
regulate your appetite and your bodys
storage of fat, says Michael Breus,
Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and sleep
specialist based in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The message is clear: Make sleep a
priority. Weve uncovered six
unexpected culprits that might be
keeping you up, so you can start
getting more shut-eyetonight.
Not winding down before bed
Most people think they should conk out
as soon as the lights go o, Breus says.
But its more like slowly pulling your
foot o the gas and putting it on the
brake. In other words, you need time to
decompress. His advice: Set an alarm to
go o at least 30 minutes before your
bedtime; thats your signal to dim the
lights, put on your pjs, and do anything
else that helps you unwind.

A nightcap Even just one drink right before bed can impact your sleep
quality and snoring, because alcohol relaxes the muscles at the back of the
throat, Feinsilver explains. And, while that drink might make you relaxed or
drowsy at rst, the eect wears o in about two hours. At that point, many
people can have whats called a rebound, and wake up tossing and turning.
An in-your-face alarm clock The ideal alarm clock
wouldnt even have numbers on it; it would just go o when you need
it to, says Steven Feinsilver, M.D., director of the Center for Sleep
Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Many people wake up
during the night, see what time it is, and start worrying about how
long they have before they need to rise and shinewhich only makes
them even more anxious. If youre prone to this habit, simply turn
the clock around.
Also try to avoid using your smartphone as an alarm; the dings or
lights of Twitter feeds and newsletters going out in the middle of the
night can interrupt your sleep. Even if you turn the alerts o, having
your phone right near you on the nightstand can create a sense of
urgency and anxiety.

Getting ready for bed in bright light A bright overhead xture
gives o more than enough light to reduce the production of melatonin,
the sleep-inducing hormone that your body produces to help you wind
down, Breus says. Take the bathroom lighting down a notch by installing a
night-light or dimmer switch.
One last tweet Its tempting to
connect with your virtual social circle
whenever you have a free moment, but
e-mailing, texting, tweeting, or posting
photos is an inherently stimulating
activity, which revs up your nervous
system. We need to quiet our brains
before bed, says Shelby Freedman
Harris, Psy.D., director of the Behavioral

Cozying up with your tablet or

these devices emit blue light, which
interferes with your bodys production
of the sleep hormone melatonin.
remedies for rest
What works, what doesnt.
A cheesy dinner Most nonprocessed cheeseslike cheddar, Swiss, and blue
contain tyramine, an amino acid that prompts your body to release a stimulating brain
chemical called norepinephrine. Norepinephrine constricts your blood vessels and can
raise blood pressure, neither of which is conducive to sleep, says Robert Rosenberg, D.O.,
medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center of Prescott Valley, Arizona, and author of
Sleep Soundly Every Night, Feel Fantastic Every Day. Rosenberg also recommends avoiding
spicy food in the evening (it can exacerbate acid reux), as well as fatty fare like steak and
French fries. Your body has to spend more energy to digest these foods, and its di cult
to wind down and sleep when your GI tract is working that hard, he says.

AT HOME WITH Jenna LaFevor
in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
HER PROJECT Refresh her
dated kitchen by painting
cabinets, replacing hardware,
adding a tile backsplash, and
building an island.
DECORATING STYLE
Vintage modern rustic. Three
things I never would have
dreamed would work together,
but somehow they do.
EVERY ROOM NEEDS
Something with history. It
helps remind you who you are
and adds character.
DIY OBSESSION Ive
painted 90 percent of my
furniture at least once.
DESIGN ADVICE Have fun!
Choose pieces and fabrics
you love and play with them
until you get it right for you.
For Jennas blog, go to
rainonatinroof.com. Q
I Did It!
My husband and I built
this island from salvaged
porch posts and my great-
grandfathers barn wood.
