War of 1812-
America divided ( West & North-pro vs. Northeast-against)
Hoped to gain Canadian lands (attacked Detroit, Niagara, and Lake Champlain)
Lost MISERABLY
Important because it earned America respect
Oliver Hazard Perry: built forts on lake Erie and had a victory
William Harrison: beats British at the battle of Thames (Tecumseh dies)
Capt. Thomas Macdonough: holds off British and saved New York and New England from falling into
the hands of the Brits
Chesapeake area:
In response they burned down the capital and were confronted at ft.Henry by Americans
South:
Andrew Jackson wins
-Battle of Horseshoe bend
-Battle of New Orleans
Treaty of Ghent ends war

Rush-Bagot Agreement-
Neither England nor America would have major control of the great lakes
Lessened tensions betw. England & America
Napoleons loss at Waterloo meant England was no longer looking over Americas shoulder and
America could focus on its affairs rather than dealing with conflict with England
American economy-
Henry clay sets up American system to support federal bank, protective tariff, and transportation
system
Panic of 1819- caused by the over-speculation of land (reason for pretty much every economic panic)

-Court system becoming very strong and exhibited the power it had through many court cases dealing with
land, slavery, and dictating whether or not certain actions were constitutional or not
-Tallmadge Amendment angers south because they fear the north will attempt to emancipate the entire
south which is foreshadowing for the civil war- this was settled by making Missouri a limited slave state by
making Maine a free state.
-the reassertion of Monarchy in Europe made Americans uneasy because large, strengthened monarchies
could pose a major threat to the American way of life if they had their eyes on American land; thus the
Monroe doctrine
-Florida Purchase Agreement-paid 5 mil for Florida and removed its claim of Texas and Spain removed its
claim of Oregon
