Making Words Lesson Plan and Variations

2 letter words:
1. As use two letters to spell as. I am as happy as a kid in a candy store. (As is a
word that we use to compare thing to each other, to show how happy, sad, etc. a
person, place, or thing is.)
2. An change one letter to spell an. The girl is eating an apple. (an is a word used to
tell us we are talking about just one thing, and we use an instead of a when that
word starts with a vowel.

3 letter words:
3. Can add one letter to spell can. Vegetable soup comes in a can. Can also means
able to do something. I can ride a bike.
4. Cap change one letter to spell cap. I am wearing a baseball cap on my head.
5. Sap - change one letter to spell sap. When I touched the tree, my hands got sticky
with sap.
6. Spa switch two letters to spell spa. My mom went to the spa to get her
fingernails painted.
7. Sea change one letter to spell sea. You may have collected sea shells when you
went to the beach.
8. Pea change one letter to spell pea. I do not like to eat green peas.
9. Ape rearrange the letters to spell ape. I saw a giant ape when I was at the zoo.

Now we are going to spell some bigger words. I might give you the word, a clue for the
word, or the definition of the word.
10. Cape spell the word that describes what superheroes wear tied around their
necks.
11. Pecan spell the word that is a type of nut. This nut is an important ingredient in a
very popular type of pie.
12. Peak spell the word that means the very top of the mountain.

Challenge or secret word: Use all the letters to spell the challenge or secret word.
(pancakes.)

Variation:
Spellers write their word in these boxes rather than use the cut-apart letter slips.






































Spellers can cut these apart so they each have a personal word sort. If not, the teacher
makes the word sorting cards. Spellers should sort the words a variety of ways. Here are
some ideas for this sort:

1. Sort words that belong in the an family and those that dont.
2. Sort words that have one syllable, two syllables, and three or more syllables.
3. Sort words that end in p and those that dont.


Words can also be sorted for concepts:
Words that name things (nouns) and words that dont.

Other transfer activities:
Since you can spell scrape, how would you spell escape?
Since you can spell peak, how would you spell beak?
Since you can spell an words, what new words could you spell with and?
