Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD MEANINGFUL CURRICULUM
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs a) use their knowledge of academic disciplines to
design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each and
every young child. Candidates understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or
content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They b) know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and
structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their
understanding. Candidates c) use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and
evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning
outcomes for every young child.

Brief Description of Evidence:

In the fall semester of 2013, during my ECED 243-Cognitive Curriculum course, I composed a mini unit
framework over the eight multiple intelligences and they are: spatial, musical, naturalist, language/linguistic,
bodily, kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, logical and mathematical. I chose a jungle theme and used
ages three and four to create the activities for the framework. I also had to include a topic, objective, and two
foundations for each.

Analysis of What I Learned:

I learned about Howard Gardner and how he believed all children think and learn differently. The eight
styles of learning, with the ways children learn best are: visual/spatial- drawing, puzzles, photos, graphics or
charts. Bodily/kinesthetic- dancing, making things, touching, role play or using real objects. Musical- cds,
instruments, sounds of their environment, or specking rhythmically. Interpersonal- interacting with peers,
group activities, writing, or emails. Intrapersonal- may shy away from others, reading books, or writing diaries.
Linguistic- may like reading, using their words, poetry, computers or word games. Last is logical/mathematical
learners and they may learn best by using reasoning, solving puzzles, investigations or experiments.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

I am competent in NAEYC standard 5 because I now have the knowledge of academic disciplines to
design, implement, and evaluate experiences to promote positive development and learning by using
Gardners multiple intelligences. This unit framework ensures developmental learning and positive outcomes
for every young child by using group activities. The multiple intelligences also helped me cover all of the
developmental domains and gave me essential inquiry tools that support a meaningful and challenging
curriculum for my early childhood students.
