InTASC Standard #8

According to the Chief Council of State Officers, an educator must understand and use a variety
of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their
connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
Instructional strategies:

Class discussion
Experiments
Assistance of technology
Lecture
Review Games

Strategies for Learning Styles:

VisualShow melearning associated with images and techniques
Learner needs to be shown through examples such as graphs, charts, and pictures.
Teachers should encourage the use of lists, written note taking, and flash cards.
PowerPoint, Prezi, and movies/short videos are visually stimulating for students.
The hand gestures and body language of the teacher during lecture can be a subtle way of
engaging the visual learner.
AuditoryTell melearning through listening
Learner needs to listen to the ideas expressed by the teacher.
The teacher should use inflections, maintain a regular (not monotonous!) tone, and include lecture
in the lesson.
Directions should be read aloud.
Students should be given the opportunity to discuss in class.
KinestheticLet me do itlearning that must be carried out through physical activities
Learner needs to experience a concept in order for it to be valid to him/her.
Teacher should incorporate activities in which students are touching, feeling, and moving while
learning.
Field trips and experiments are great ways for students to be active participants in their learning
experience.
Younger children can use blocks, toys, and other tangible objects to learn a concept such as
addition and subtraction.
