The main reason our food

assistance ministry is essential to our community is that
hunger is real for many
families in Ashe county.
According to a Hunger in
America report published in
2014:
There have been many
job losses as factories
and businesses have left
our county over the past
few years, leaving people searching for ways
to make ends meet
30% of Ashe county
children live in foodinsecure homes
63% are eligible to receive free/reduced price
meals at school
Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance (Commonly
known as food stamps)
serves 4,923 Ashe county citizens.
Many of our neighbors
have to decide between
buy food or paying for
medical care, utilities,
housing or transportation.
Many are purchasing
inexpensive, unhealthy
food.
Our Food Pantry is one of

the anchor ministries of our

church. Every week someone from our church picks
up a truckload of food that
Second Harvest Food Bank
delivers to our county and
unloads it at the church. It
is sorted and put into boxes
for various size families.
Volunteers hand the food
out and a fresh order is
made for the next week.
We pay reduced prices for
all of the food we receive.
Some of the food is provided by the federal government, some is grocery store
surplus, while other food is
given by community food
drives. We also collect food
at our church the second
Sunday of every month in
purple bags, and people donate money to purchase the
food from Second Harvest.
Occasionally we make a run
to the store to get items that
are needed to provide wellbalanced food boxes.
We serve a unique population as the only churchbased food pantry in Ashe
county. We give away food
every Tuesday morning and
the third Thursday evening.
Our neighbors are currently

eligible to receive food every

other month. About 100
neighbors have been added
to the list of those we serve
this year. At the current
rate of increase, we will be
serving over 500 individuals
per month very soon.
Due to the growth, our
leaders realized that we
needed to expand our oneroom operation to meet the
needs.
The first step was to create
more space and a better
flow for food distribution.
We now have a door in the
wall between the food pantry and the room next to it
so that we can use both
rooms for food distribution.
We installed a shelf door
into each room, which will
help with distribution. We
converted an office into
space for storage and for
seating our neighbors as
they wait their turn.

Expanding Our Food Assistance Ministry cont.

The Narcotics Anonymous group that
meets in our church has moved to the room
next to the sanctuary to provide for these
changes. It has been a good change for the
NA group because their meeting space is
now larger.
The second step in our expansion was to
apply for a major grant from the Duke Endowment to assist with the purchase of
more food. We are praying that we will be
granted $60,000 over the next three years.
That would help us assist our neighbors
once a month instead of once every other
month.
We appreciate the heroes that have made
our food pantry operational this year: Our
Coordinator Karen Cooper, Transportation
Coordinator and Packer Glenn Crawley,

Page 2

Financial Coordinator Betsy Reeves and our

Administrative Assistant Ashley Church.
We have a wonderful group of volunteers
who pick up or distribute food and there
are many more who make donations of cash
or food. We have others who have generously provided eggs or vegetables from
their own gardens!
We hope that as our food pantry expands,
our donor base and donations will expand
as well. Through October of 2014, we
spent almost $18,000 on food. This money
has all been donated for food. Thank you
for your marvelous support of the vision to
feed our neighbors in need. It takes all of
us working together to make it a vital ministry!

BISHOP GOODPASTERS DIALOGUES

Bishop Goodpaster facilitated a panel discussion in June
at the Annual Conference about the future of our denomination, including the possibility of denominational
division over issues such as Biblical interpretation and
issues related to homosexuality. During that time it was
announced that there would be a series of conversations
at various sites across the conference during the coming

months, open to interested United Methodists. These

90-minute sessions will utilize a variety of models, with
opportunities to engage in conversation in a spirit of
respect, care, and openness to the Holy Spirit. The one
nearest us is 2:30 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7
at FaithBridge United Methodist Church in Blowing
Rock. Anyone may attend.

YEAR END GIVING STRATEGIES

The end of 2014 is approaching. We are trying to complete our churchs ministry goals through our giving of
offerings to the General Fund. One strategy that many
people have discovered for their giving is the donation
of appreciated stocks and/or mutual fund shares as
charitable contributions. Why?
A donor who gives appreciated securities will pay no

capital gains tax on the charitable contribution. Example: Someone who owns XYZ Fund has a cost basis of
$3000, but the value has increased to $6000 in the past
five years. If the shares are sold, the investor gets
$6000 but has to pay tax on $3000 of capital gains. If
the shares are given to the church, the contribution is
worth $6000 as a charitable contribution deduction,
with no capital gains tax to pay.

Please send celebratory messages which reflect our members talents and contributions to our church and our
community to Ashley at jeffersonumc@skybest.com or drop your items in the office mailbox.

WELCOME LITTLE ONES!

We would like to congratulate JoAnn
Crawley on the birth on her grandson,
Brayden Max Humphrey (left), who was
born on October 20th. Brayden weighed 6
pounds and 11 ounces and was 18 inches
long.
Also, congratulations to Gay Freeman on
the birth of her grandson, Richard Ezekiel
McFarland (right), who was born on September 26th.

CHILDRENS PLAY REHEARSALS
Rehearsals for Christmas Play will be held Wednesday, December 3 6:308:00 and Sunday, December 7 12:00-2:00.
A dress rehearsal will be held Saturday, December 13 6:008:00.
WINTER BREAK FROM WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNERS

Our hostess, Jackie Brown, has done an awesome job

providing meals on Wednesday nights this year. We are
also indebted to Kalen Fulbright for leading our children's
bell choirs, and to Maranda Thompson, Collen Dixon and
Laura Kesler for their outstanding work with our youth.
Following the Senior Adult Night on Wednesday, December 17, we will take a break from our Wednesday night
programming and resume on January 7.
CHRISTMAS CANTATA
On December 7 at 11:00AM, the Jefferson United Methodist Church Chancel Choir will perform a Christmas Cantata
entitled, "Images of Adoration." We all enjoy the beauty of
Christmasthe music and candles, the greenery and
crimson flowers, the holy symbols of the manger, and the
star. These symbols are not merely decorations of the season. Their presence draws us into the story of Christmas
each year, reminding us of the power, simplicity, and
awesome significance of the birth of the Christ Child. The
Cantata explores these reflections of Christ through
a distinctive musical style of memorable tunes and colorful
harmonies, celebrating the Child in a thoughtful, jubilant,
and spiritual way. Soloists include Susanne Black, Jayne
Leonard, and Swift Black. Narrators will include members
of the Chancel Choir.

The senior adults of Jefferson United Methodist Church are invited to dinner and Christmas music in the fellowship hall on
Wednesday, December 17. Our children will sing Christmas carols and the children's bell choirs will play. The meal will be served
between 5:15 and 6:15, and the cost for the meal is $5 per person. There will be no youth or children's bell rehearsal on that
evening.

There will be no 9:00 AM worship

in December.

CELEBRATE A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR

Are you tired of how consumerism has stolen the
soul of Christmas?

debt. Free your resources for things that truly

matter.

This year, make a plan for a joyous celebration of

Jesus birth that enriches hearts and the world
around us, not a retail circus that depletes our
pocketbooks and defeats our spirits. Think of
ways that you can do four things:

Give More---Give more of your your presence,

your hands, your words, your time, your heart. Let
the season improve the quality of life for your family, not create more burdens.

Worship Fully---Christmas begins and ends with

Jesus! Enter Advent with an overwhelming passion to worship to the fullest.
Spend Less---This isn't a call to stop giving, but to
spend wisely and free yourself from the anxiety of

Love All---The Christmas season is about love.

What can you do to change a life and give gifts of
love, especially to the poor, the forgotten, the
marginalized, and the sick in ways that make a
difference?

THE STORIES BEHIND THE WINDOWS

The Stories Behind the Windows are
biographical sketches of the men and
women in whose memory windows have
been placed in our church. The lives of
these dedicated Christians cover many
years from the early 1800s until the
1970s. Each story tells of devotion to and
love for this church, and those of us who
feel the same love can be thankful for their
lives. They helped make our church what
it is today.

Lessie Jones was a gentle, kind woman

who was as active in her church and community as her health would permit her to
be. On the other hand, her gregarious husband busied himself in many civic endeavors as well as matters concerning the cities,
county and state governments. He once
served as a deputy sheriff and on school
planning boards. A Methodist steward, a
Democrat, he also served as Rotary president, a Mason and Odd Fellow. He took

FOOD PANTRY TIN CAN OFFERING

On the second Sunday of every month, we have been bringing
food for the Food Pantry and the children have been bringing it to the front
of the sanctuary. We have learned that
it is more cost efficient to give money
than food. So the Christian Education
Council decided the children will start
collecting money in tin cans on the
second Sundays instead of food. The
money will rattle and make all kinds of
noise! And that's the sound of feeding our neighbors!

AED unless we have at least 30.
If you are interested in attending
the training, please call the
church office or sign up on the
