Locating and labeling the maps with the oceans, continents, lakes, rivers, mountain
ranges, and equator
Independent Project - Creating a tour route across the country
Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods
Media:
24 laptop computers with Google Earth installed Will be used in two ways. First as an
interactive map to locate the 7 continents, 5 oceans, equator, lakes, rivers, and
mountain ranges. Second Google Earths tool of place markers will be used to create
a tour across the country.
1 document camera Will be used to project the worksheets as the teacher explains how
each sheet will be completed and the expectations for each.
1 SMART Board Will be used to display the images that the document camera is
projecting.
Materials:
Map Worksheets The students will fill in and color the worksheets as they use Google
Earth to find the location of various geographical features around the country and
world
Create a Tour Worksheet The students will use this as a guide when creating a tour
across America and will record the features in the order in which they are placing
them
Pencils Used to label the map worksheets with the appropriate titles and fill out the create
a tour worksheet
Colored Pencils Used to color the various geographical features on the map worksheet
Social Studies Folder Used to keep the worksheets in so the students can refer back to
them as a study tool for a later assessment
Post-It Notes Used in whole group introduction to labeling map skills and will be used on
the SMART board
Methods:
Whole Group Introduction to Geographical Features The teacher will highlight the
continents, oceans, rivers, lakes, and mountain ranges to avoid any confusion of
what the students should be looking for. This introduction will also include a rough
pretest.
Whole Group Introduction of Small Group Instruction The teacher will go over each of the
two centers and explain what is expected at each. The teacher will also tell the
students that they will have approximately 40 minutes so their time should be used
wisely. The teacher will divide the class into six groups of four, by pulling the students

3
name out of a hat. The teacher will tell the students that after the 40 minutes are up
and their worksheets are filled out they will use what they learned to complete project
in Google Earth on the computer.
Small Group Instruction The students will work in six groups for four to complete the
worksheets.
Independent Project The students will work independently to complete a project using
Goggle Earth. The teacher will explain that the students will use Google Earth to
create a virtual tour, highlighting the geographical features that they just researched
and located. The teacher will model how to create a place marker, path, and record
their tour on Google Earth. The teacher will also demonstrate how to save their tour
when its completed so it can be presented the next day.
Require Learner Participation
Whole Group Introduction to Geographical Features:
The teacher will use the document camera to display the map worksheet on the SMART
board for all the students to see. The teacher will then point to the various places on the
map that the students will be responsible for finding and labeling using Google Earth. The
teacher will call on students randomly to take a post it note and label the features before
they begin, this will serve as a rough pretest for the teacher to gauge how much was
learned during the assignment. The students will be active in this process even though their
answers may not be correct at this point in the lesson. The teacher will also instruct
students that their maps should be labeled neatly and colored neatly so it can be reread and
used to study.
Whole Group Introduction of Small Group Instruction:
The teacher will explain the two center activities to the class before separating the students
and letting them work. The teacher will leave the worksheet displayed on the SMART board
as the centers are explained. The teacher will instruct students that they are to work in their
groups to find and label the geographic features that were just explained to them. The
teacher will walk around monitor the students work and progress. The teacher will then
separate the class into six groups of four by drawing names out of a hat and give each
group a laptop. As the students work the teacher will walk around and monitor the groups
progress and how well the students are working together.
Small Group Instruction:
The students will work in groups of four while using Google Earth to find and label the
various geographical features on the map worksheet. Each group will have one laptop with
Google Earth installed and will work together and take turns using to program. Once all the
features have been labeled they will raise their hands and have the teacher check their
work. If everything looks good then students may put the laptop away and color in their
map worksheets.
Independent Project:
The teacher will call the students back to their seats and have their laptops on their desk
open to Google Earth. The students will have both their completed map worksheet and the

4
create a tour worksheet on their desk. The teacher will then bring up Google Earth on their
computer and project it on the SMART board. The teacher will demonstrate how to use the
place marker tool located in the program by putting one on the school and one at
Washington D.C. The students will then create their own place marker on their own laptops
and the teacher will walk around to make sure everyone understands. The teacher will then
show the students how to utilize the tour function. Once the students have place marked all
of the geographical features they will click on the path button in the tool bar on Google Earth
and create a tour which will be showed to the teacher. The teacher will demonstrate this
process and watch students complete a tour using the two place markers that were just
used as examples. The students will save their tour to Google Earth on their laptop and will
present their tours to the class the following day. As the students make their tour the
students will fill out the tour worksheet by writing down the order of their place marks, in
case the students forget, and as a reference for the teacher to look at while the students are
presenting. The teacher will then tell the students this is an independent assignment and
that they should begin working. The teacher will walk around as the students work to
monitor progress and be of assistance of needed.
Evaluate & Revise
Student Performance:
The students will show their understanding of the material by correctly labeling and coloring
the various geographic locations on the worksheets. The student will also demonstrate their
knowledge by successfully creating a virtual tour on Google Earth using the place markers
and their knowledge. The students will also be evaluated on the corresponding worksheet
that they created. The students will also receive a grade based on how well they work
during the lesson.
Instructor Performance:
While the students are working on the worksheets the teacher will walk around and monitor
their progress. If needed the teacher will step in and help struggling students or those
students who are getting off track. While the students are working on their project the
teacher will walk around to ensure that students are staying on track since they will not have
an unlimited amount of time to complete the assignment. Once all projects are presented
the teacher will be able to evaluate the mastery of each student and decide if more
instruction needs to be given the following day.
Media Performance:
The media used in this lesson provided students an interactive way to the various
geographic features around the country and the world. It also served as a tool which
students were able to create a virtual tour assessment. The media was a success as long
as the students were able to use the program to fill out the worksheets and complete the
assessment without any troubles.
