Academic Standard

RI.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing
inferences from the text.

the point of view they represent.
NCSS People, places, and environments

IEP Goal
Lesson Objective

None needed at this time

Students will be able to research and discover information based on an image.
Students will be able to quote accurately from the text when explaining what they have read about the giant
barking from of Montserrat.

Assessment

Informal assessment: Students completion of worksheet. Students participating in class discussion.

Formative assessment: Journal entry after completion of this lesson.

I Can Statement

I can describe detailed information about an image that I am presented.

I can quote accurately from a text when sharing information through a written assignment or during a
discussion.

Instructional Strategies/Learning Tasks

E.Q. Can people adapt to all environments and survive?
How does the geography influence how you live?

Accommodations/Research
Connections

A.S. Visual discovery using the image of the Mountain Chicken/Giant Barking Frog
http://www.arkive.org/mountain-chicken/leptodactylus-fallax/

Have picture of the frog from the site listed above projected for students to see

Allow students 5-7 minutes to look at the picture and write down their thoughts and

Visual Discovery

This meets cognitive needs

Have 2-3 laminated copies

of picture for students who
need a copy at their desk
Students may word process
their thoughts as needed

observations about the frog in their journal

Have them pair and share what they thought about the picture

This meets social and

language needs

Activate prior knowledge

Blooms Higher Order

Thinking

This meets emotional needs

A couple students may need

to work at the front table
and require additional
assistance
This meets physical needs
(fine motor)
Technology in the classroom

Cooperative Learning
This meets social needs

Remind students about the book we read the other day, My Little Island, by Frane
Lessac. Re-read page 10 in order for them to recall the details about the story.

Ask students and facilitate discussion:

How does the picture on the screen compare to what the book describes?(analysis)

How does it compare to what they imagined when we read the story?(evaluate)

Introduce Research Activity

Students will work independently at their desks using laptops to research the Giant
Barking Frog

Explain the worksheet and check for understanding of expectations

This activity should take approximately 20 minutes, circulate around the room to
ensure students are having success using the indicated websites and laptops

As students complete this research activity, they can share with a partner or small
group their findings using level 1 voices (monitor noise level and adjust plan)

Show the students the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0yS4-Zt0ZI

Activate prior knowledge

and reinforce some of their
discoveries from today

Have these questions visible

Blooms

This is a very informative National Geographic video about what has caused the decrease in
population of the giant barking frog (or mountain chicken). It has great references to the
impact the exclusion zone may have on the frogs. This relates to prior learning about the
Soufriere Hills volcano. Important connection of information previously learned.
Pause and ask questions throughout video:

Find the islands of Montserrat and Dominica on your Caribbean map

What is a delicacy? (knowledge)

What does it mean to be critically endangered? (knowledge)

How would you explain habitat destruction? (evaluate)

Compare the frogs of Dominica & Montserrat (analysis)

Explain how the exclusion zone in Montserrat (from the volcano) can be beneficial
(synthesis)

Excellent video about how the frog is being reintroduced to the island.
