EMH104 Week 2

Activities:
Week 2 Required Task 1
Reflect on the idea that history can be considered the story of humanity as a whole. Has this changed
your understanding of the study of history? Would this change the way you see primary school
history? What do you think about the comment made, Thats not history, thats science? Has the clip
convinced you that it is history?
Share your reflection with your forum group and respond to one other persons posts.

Comment made: Thats not history, thats science?

This comment is such a broad idea, in high school the big bang theory was introduced through the
subject science and thats why the idea has come about that it is science and not history
However science is history and history is science. The two categories share theories and content.
History involves science aspects and research, and science is the technique in which we uncover and
explore history.
Week 2 Required Task 2
a. As you are watching the clips, reflect on the concept of evidence and how different forms of
evidence are used and validated in the documentary.
Drawings and figures of animals, humans, weapons and maps. Evidence of existent, evidence of
creation and culture. Evidence of a resourceful living area.
b. Record the content covered in the First Footprints clips and suggest whether you think the
content fits under the categories of history, geography, both or neither.
Under the headings history AND geography, the history of geography (maps) and the geography
of history (where certain resources and hunting grounds were located) etc.
c.

List 3 images that you found most interesting/ powerful in the clips and describe what you
might use the images for in a primary HSIE lesson or unit.

Boomerang the thought behind, the advance in Australian (returning) boomerang to any other
around the world.
Recognition from elders, the stories that are revealed from heritage and memorial sights. This is
how it has been passed through generations and continues to do so.
Maps and Separation of Papua New Guinea and Australia The knowledge behind, why it separated,
what effect the separation had on Torres Strait islanders and Australians.

Week 2 Required Task 4

a. Research the Indigenous cultural/language group/s of your local area.

Bathurst: Wiradjuri
b. Briefly describe the geological characteristics of the area.
A large area in central New South Wales, from the Blue Mountains in the east, to Hay in the west,
North to Nyngan, south to Albury and everywhere in between.
c.

Research the Dreaming attached to a specific local site.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IVp3m4hTHw
A dreaming story found on the above site. The duck had disobeyed the elders in her mob and has
to take her ducklings away for punishment, they head further and further down south reaching
colder waters. They finally reach Macquarie Lake, The mother duck cant bear the transition to
much colder waters she dies. Her ducklings form the platypus to protect themselves from the
colder water.
My take: Teaches a lesson not to disobey your elders, Karma for not obeying elder in mob, how
the platypus came to be, Macquarie is on Wiradjuri country.
