Subject Topic: Science The Flower-Fruit-Seed Connection

Grade: 3rd/Number of Students: 24
Time: 1:20-2:00p.m.
Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to describe the function of the flower
and how a flower grows into a fruit.

At the end of this lesson students will be able to determine that the function of the fruit is
to protect the seeds and help in seed dispersal.

Standards:

L.OL.03.31 Describe the function of the following plant parts: ower, stem, root, and
leaf.

Materials:

Paper Plates

Apple Trees in Season Card Set (8)

Comparing a Fruit and a Flower Handout

1 Sharp Knife

12 Apples

Pencil

Instruction:

Anticipatory Set
o Go over expectations for whole group work.
o Remind students that we are going to be comparing the parts that we saw in the
flower to the parts that we are going to investigate with the apple and looking for
similarities and differences.

Procedure
1. Pass out the Apple Trees in Season card set to every group. Explain to them that
they need to work together to figure out the correct order that the cards go in.
a. Study the pictures and brainstorm your ideas with your group.

b. Questions to think about:


i. What happened to the blossoms?
ii. Where did the apples come from?
2. Have groups come together after 5 minutes of strategy to share their ideas on
the order and what they think about apples and how they form on trees.
a. Questions to think about:
i. Where did you start in your order?
ii. Why did you choose that order?
iii. What pictures are similar to the flower observations we did?
iv. So how does an apple relate to the function of a flower?
v. What would happen if there werent any blossoms on an apple
tree?
3. Distribute apples to 12 groups (every 2 table partners) and cut the apple open
for them.
4. Pass out and explain the handout Comparing a Fruit and a Flower sheet.
a. Due by the end of science class.
i. Questions:
1. What do you see in the center of the apple?
2. What did you see in the center of the flower?
3. If you could watch the inside of a flower grow for
weeks, what would happen to the center of the flower?
Accommodations/Extensions: We do have 2 teachers, a classroom aid, and a grandma that comes
in the classroom incase students need guidance or assistance.
Closing: Have students put their finished worksheet in the science turn in bin and grab out their
writing notebook to prepare for the next writing lesson.
Transition: Students will be coming in from their special. They know they are supposed to sit
down and wait for instructions. Once assignments are completed at the end of the science time
frame they need to be turned in and notebooks open for our next instructions for writing.
Assessment: Use the worksheet/handout and classroom discussion to assess the students ability
to describe the function of the flower, fruit, and seed.
