Khan Academy points: 44,250
The Khan Academy activity was in order to expose pre-service teachers to the world of online learning. Khan Academy offers a variety of subjects for the learner to choose from. Each subject includes subcategories in which the teacher can select programs for their students to follow. The programs guide the students to master the main skills of every subject. The algebra section provides different activities that allow the learner to develop these skills. When one misses a question, the program repeats the skill until it is mastered. This repetition breeds full understanding of algebraic concepts. Since I am an AYA major with a focus in history, I found this activity to be somewhat unhelpful. It would have beneficial if I was allowed to choose activities from my particular content area. Although it was nice to brush up on my middle school math, it was unnecessary for me to focus on something that I will never use in my classroom. However, I think the concept behind online learning will be useful in my classroom. Since adolescents nowadays have a focus on technology, the option of online activities may help to convey ideas better than any other teaching format. This activity could be improved by allowing those who are not elementary/middle childhood educators to choose their own path to follow on Khan Academy. This would help to develop a history activity repertoire.
