He was born on August 6th 1928 in Pittsburgh,

Pennsylvania. During third grade, He had Sydenhams

Chorea which is the nervous system disease that
causes involuntary movements of the extremities ,
which is believed to be a complication of scarlet fever
which causes skin pigmentation blotchiness. He
became a hypochondriac, developing a fear of
hospitals and doctors. Often bedridden as a child, he
became an outcast at school and bonded with his
mother. At times when he was confined to bed, he
drew, listened to the radio and collected pictures of
movie stars around his bed. Warhol later described
this period as very important in the development of his
personality, skill-set and preferences.

After graduating from Schenley high school in

1945. his intentions were to study art
education at the University of Pittsburgh in
the hope of becoming an art teacher, but his
plans changed and he enrolled in the
Carnegie Institute of Technology in
Pittsburgh, where he studied commercial art.
In 1949, he moved to New York City and
began a career in magazine illustration and
advertising. In 1949, he earned a Bachelor of
Fine Arts in pictorial design.

During the 1950s, Warhol gained fame for his

whimsical ink drawings of show
advertisements. These were done in a loose,
blotted-ink style, and figured in some of his
earliest showing at the Bodley Gallery in
New York. With the expansion of the record
industry and the introduction of the vinyl
records, Hi-FI, and stereophonic recordings,
RCA Records hired Andy, along with another
freelance artist, Sid Maurer , to design album
covers and promotional materials.

Andy was an early adaptors of the silk screen

printmaking process as a technique for making
paintings, His earliest silk-screening in paining
involved hand-drawn images though this soon
progressed to the use of photographically derived silkscreening in paintings. Prior to entering the field of fine
art, Andy's commercial art background also involved
innovative techniques for image making that were
somewhat related to printmaking techniques. When
rendering commercial objects for advertising he
devised a technique that result in the characteristic
image. His imagery used in advertising was often
executed by means of applying ink to paper then
blotting the ink while still wet. This was akin to a
printmaking process on the most rudimentary scale.

He held exhibitions at the Hugo Gallery and the

Bodley Gallery in New york City and in
California his first West Coast gallery exhibition
was on 9th July 1962 in the Ferus Gallery of Los
Angeles. The exhibition marked his West Coast
debut f pop art. Andy Warhol's first New York
solo pop art exhibition was hosted at Eleanor
Ward's Stable Gallery November 624, 1962. The
exhibit included the works Marilyn Diptych, 100
Soup Cans, 100 Coke Bottles, and 100 Dollar Bills.
At the Stable Gallery exhibit, the artist met for
the first time poet John Giorno who would star
in Warhol's first film, Sleep, in 1963

It was during the 1960s that Warhol began to make paintings of

iconic American objects such as dollar bills, mushroom
clouds, electric chairs, Campbell's Soup Cans, Coca-Cola
bottles, celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley,
Marlon Brando, Troy Donahue, Muhammad Ali, and
Elizabeth Taylor, as well as newspaper headlines or
photographs of police dogs attacking civil rights protesters.
During these years, he founded his studio, "The Factory" and
gathered about him a wide range of artists, writers,
musicians, and underground celebrities. His work became
popular and controversial. Warhol had this to say about
Coca Cola. Warhol devoted much of his time to rounding up
new, rich patrons for portrait commissionsincluding Shah
of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, his wife Empress Farah
Pahlavi, his sister Princess Ashraf Pahlavi, Mick Jagger, Liza
Minnelli, John Lennon, Diana Ross, and Brigitte Bardot

He died in New York City at 6:32 am on February 22, 1987.

According to news reports, he had been making good
recovery from a routine gallbladder surgery at New
York Hospital before dying in his sleep from a sudden
post-operative cardiac arrhythmia. Prior to his
diagnosis and operation, Warhol delayed having his
recurring gallbladder problems checked, as he was
afraid to enter hospitals and see doctors. His family
sued the hospital for inadequate care, saying that the
arrhythmia was caused by improper care and water
intoxication. The case was quickly settled out of court;
Warhol's family received an undisclosed sum of
money.

In my opinion, I like Andy Warhols work

because of the style he works in and the
colours he uses. I like pop art because its
bright and colourful and this style art is
quite eye catching. I prefer the bright
colourful work compared to dark work.
To work in the style of Andy Warhol
would be a good experience for myself
and others.

The subject matter of this photo is Marilyn Monroe. The image

is abstract and I think to create this image lighting and
editing was used due to the fact of the image being bright
in colour and using colours in which wont be printed by a
normal photograph. I think they have used a narrow depth
of field because the focus of the photo is on Marilyn and she
stands out against the background. I think that this photo
has been framed as its been taken into a close up and an
archway hasn't been used to create focus on the subject
matter.
I think this photo is overexposed as there is a greater use of
bright colours compared to the small use of darker colours
which have been used to create an effect on the image.
I think that this photo is bright, happy, bold, memorizing
and graphic.

Cristina is a self- taught photographer. She was

born in Figueras, Spain in 1962. Cristinia
started working on self-portraits in 1988, after
five years of heroin addiction and way
before webcams and mobile phones with
cameras made the format ubiquitous, as a
sort of intense inner search and a need to
express inadequacy and difficult emotions.
Later on she realized that the practice of the
self-portrait was a way to explore and
affirm her creative identity.

The project "Her/Story, Two Women Behind the Camera", which

involves artists Cristina Nunez from Spain and Lotte Konow Lund
from Norway, obtained one of the grants for the programme
"Cultural Diversity and Cultural Exchange" of the Norwegian
Embassy in Madrid within the European Economic Area Financial
Mechanism 2009-2014. Her/Story. Two women behind the camera
presents two artists video in a dialogue: La vie en rose by
Spanish artist Cristina Nunez created in 2013, and Changing art and
restoring the studio by Norwegian artist Lotte Konow Lund
created in 2013. Her/story is a collaborative art project between the
two artists, facilitated by two Italian curators, Lorella Scacco and
Stella Bottai. The project will consist in 6 months of artwork
production of the two artists in a collaborative project, two
exhibitions, one in Barcelona and one in Oslo, a self-portrait
workshop for women in prison in Barcelona, where the artists
video works will be projected and discussed, and a workshop for
the public in Norway.

Cristina ran a numerous of self-portrait workshops in a number

of places ranging from schools to universities to galleries
and even prisons. Here are some of the places in which her
workshops took place.
Luova gallery, Helsinki
MC2 gallery, Milan
MS galera, Madrid
Brians 1 prison, Barcelona
Wad Ras prison, Barcelona
Lledoners prison, Barcelona
San Vittore prison, Milan
University of Roehampton, London
University of Luxemburg
Institute of Family Therapy, Florence

In my opinion, I dont like the style that

Cristinia works in because it is quite dull
and sets a gloomy atmosphere. I prefer
portraits that create a happy atmosphere.
I would like to try this style of work so
that I could gain the experience but I
dont think I would use it personally, as I
prefer to work in styles like pop art
because there bright

The subject matter of this photo is the person and also

there is some focus on the camera which is used. The
image is realistic and not alot of lighting has been
used as the background is quite dark and gloomy. I
think the depth of field used is quite narrow as the
person is more sharp and the background is quite
blurry this made the image seem dull. I think the photo
has been framed to a close up as there isnt a lot of
objects in the background as they wanted the focus on
the person, also an archway has been used at the top
create a better focus.
I think that this photo is underexposed as there isnt a
lot of lighting and the image is extremely dark. I
would describe this image as dark, sombre, gloomy,
bland and dramatic.

Dan is a trained and degreed photographer as

well as a fine arts major and professional
graphic designer. His multi-layered
background allows his artistic style to carry
through to show your individuality while
adding a creative element to your lifelong
memories. Minnick is a 2005 graduate of the
San Francisco Art Institute, and has
participated in solo and group exhibitions
around California. Much of his work involves
photo booth photos, singly and in strips.

In my opinion, I like the style of work that

Daniel works in because its his photos are
quite bold and some are basic and some are
complex. I like the idea that he uses photo
booths and creates multiple images in strips.
I would like to work in this style of work as I
think that would be able to work well and
create different images by creating multiple
images.
The thing I like best is that he works in a
black and white feature and this helps create
a dramatic atmosphere in a plain photo.

The subject matter of this photo is the person

because he stands out and also the smoke is
quite bold despite being blurry. The image looks
realistic and there is alot of light used and this
makes the effect that Daniel wanted to stand
out against a plain background. I think a wide
depth of field is used as most of the photo is in
focus and it isn't just focused on one part of the
photo. The photo has been framed and cropped
to create a close up feeling. I think the image is
quite equal in contrast with dark and light
areas. The mood of this photo is happy,
energetic, imaginative, graphic and memorizing.

Tomoko Sawada was born in 1977 in Kobe, Japan and is

now based in New York, USA. She has gained
recognition in the international contemporary art
scene as a photography artist and is a recipient of
numerous important photography awards worldwide.
Her work is collected by more than ten museums
including Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the
International Center of Photography (ICP) in New
York, The Essl Collection of Contemporary Art and
Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/ Contemporary Art
(MAK) in Austria. Disguising herself to portray
different roles traditionally assigned to the female
gender in Japan, Sawada seeks to describe and
question Japanese societal norms and culture in a
highly thought provoking yet light-hearted nature.

In 1998, she was awarded a degree in media design at Seian

University Art and Design, Ohtsu, Japan, following this degree in
2000, she went on to get a degree in Photography at Seian
University of Art and Design, Ohtsu, Japan.
Also she has been awarded a number of different awards:
2000 - Canon New Cosmos of Photography 2000, which was a
grand prize
2004 - 29th Kimura Ihei Memorial Photography Award
The Twentieth Annual ICP Infinity
Hyogo Arts Promotion Award
2005 - Kobe City Award of Encouragement for Cultural Activities
2006 - Bleue Mer Award
Photo-eye, BEST BOOKS OF 2006
2007 - The Kyoto Prefecture Culture Prize [Incentive prize]
2008 - The Higashikawa Prize [New Photographer]

She also has attended a number of solo

exhibitions from 1997 till 2011:
1997 - "I Speak about Me", Gallery Chat
Noir, Hyogo, Japan
1999 - "ID400", Clean Sisters Gallery, Osaka,
Japan
2011 - "Masquerad - Solo Presentation of
Tomoko Sawada",

In my opinion, I like the style that Tomoko

works in because I like the fact she
creates a number of different images to
create a finalised image.
Also I think these images would look
better in colours instead of using black
and white as this would create a better
atmosphere.
I would like to create images like this.

The subject matter of this photo is the person.

These images are realistic and I would say a
number of lighting sources have been used to
make the subject matter stand out against the
background. I think that a wide depth of field
has been used because neither the background
or subject matter is blurry. I think the image has
been framed to obtain focus on the subject
matter as there is no objects in the background
to attract attention.
I think that there is an equal contrast of light on
the photos, but the subject matter is under
exposed. I think this photo is plain, dull, bland.

I like this idea because he has placed an object

in front of the camera, which looks like a blind
to create the effect that you are looking
through something while looking the image. I
think this is a very creative idea and may try
this myself.

I like the idea that there has been characters

placed in the background and the images have
been created and this has created a child like
atmosphere. I think this is a wonderful idea
and would like to try this style myself maybe if
I use the idea of me and my nephew and I
could add images of micky mouse etc.
