This year, PCSO celebrates a significant edition of the PCSO Presidential Gold Cup not
only is this the 42nd running of this race, it also occurs during the agencys milestone 80th
anniversary.
As the longest continuously-held sporting event in the country, the PCSO Gold Cup holds an
iconic position in the world of horseracing and sports in general. Given the many economic
and other challenges that society faces today, the fact that we still enjoy it today speaks of
PCSOs commitment to uphold its mandate to support racing.
PCSO brings the same dedication to all its endeavors, particularly those in line with its
core service providing medical and healthcare-related assistance and core activity
raising funds for charity.
On this, its 80th anniversary year, PCSO renews its vow

of service to the Filipino people, who can be assured of
the hope and help that agency offers.

In behalf of the Committee on Races, welcome to the PCSOs 80th Anniversary edition of
the PCSO Presidential Gold Cup.
For more than four decades, the PCSO has sustained this grand tradition as part of its
legacy to the sport of horseracing. Today the race has attained no less a status than
legendary, and we are proud to be a part of this historic event and to be able to bring it
to you year after year.
We thank the Philippine Racing Commission for partnering once again with PCSO to make
this race the richest on the calendar, and the Manila Jockey Club for their support in
staging this event at their San Lazaro Leisure Park this year.
Our gratitude also goes to the participants who have joined to
make this event another exciting one, and to the racing fans who
will make this day successful.
Our best Christmas and New Year wishes as well to everyone, as
we celebrate with thanks all the momentous occasions we have
been privileged to witness.
I wish all racing aficionados will always patronize the PCSOs staging
of the most awaited race of the year the PCSO Presidential Gold
Cup. Through this and the other races that comprise the PCSOs
racing program, we hope the industry gains incentives to continue
breeding top-caliber horses that will adorn the sport and bring
entertainment to sports fans.

The PCSO Presidential Gold Cup is the most-awaited and prestigious event in horse racing
in the country. The horse owners, jockeys, trainers and other personnel prepare diligently
and conscientiously for this race because pride and prestige are at stake.
The Presidential Gold Cup is rich in tradition because it is in this race where the finest,
strongest, fastest, and sturdiest horse is seen and known. The horse racing aficionado
eagerly awaits this event to see and enjoy the competition and battle among the best
horses in the country.

to the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) on the celebration of their 80th
Anniversary of selfless and unwavering service to the Filipino people.

With the staging of the 42nd PCSO Presidential Gold Cup at San Lazaro Leisure Park
(SLLP), MJCI is honored to be a partner of the PCSO in achieving its noble objectives. This
prestigious racing event, participated in by the best horses in the industry, is an awaited
spectacle among racing fans.
I am confident that this year will be no different. More significantly, the Bayang Karerista is
given the opportunity to do their share as part of the proceeds will help fund the various
programs of the PCSO.
I take this opportunity to congratulate and commend the efforts of the PCSO under its

the 41st PCSO Presidential Gold
Cup, where the outstanding favorite
Hagdang Bato was defeated by
nemesis Pugad Lawin.
The PCSOs flagship racing

event, held over 2,000 meters
on 1 Dec. 2013 at the Manila
Jockey Clubs San Lazaro
Leisure Park, attracted ten
runners with its first prize
of P4 million P3 million
from PCSO plus P1 million
from the Philippine Racing
Commission.
Hagdang Bato, winner of
the PCSO 2012 Gold Cup, was
gunning for a back-to-back
win. The talented 4YO colt of
Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur
C. Abalos had also won the
PCSO Freedom Cup in Feb.
2013, the PCSO Silver Cup in
July 2013, and the MARHO
Classic in Nov. 2013, among
other victories.
In the 2013 PCSO Gold

Cup, Hagdang Bato was sent
off with over P600,000 in
the Daily Double pool that
totaled P674,000, with Spring
Collection the remote second
favorite, followed by
My Champ and
Pugad Lawin,
who sold only
P6,974 in the
DD.
When the gates
flew back, fans were
dismayed to see
Hagdang Batos front
legs buckle under him at
the jump-out, his belly
almost grazing the sand.
He recovered, but too
late. Arriba Amor had
the lead, with the Jonathan

unexpected outcome.

Hagdang Bato and Pugad
Lawin meet again at Santa
Ana Park last 1 June 2014 to
battle for glory in one of the
sports major stakes races
and for the fat purse of P2.5
million.
Hagdang Bato, the
defending champion of the
event, was considered a
shoo-in and emerged the
outstanding favorite in the
sales despite enduring a
heartbreaking loss to Pugad
Hagdang Bato, guided by

Jonathan Hernandez, grabbed
the early lead, while Pugad
Lawin clung to his flank,
the others running lengths
behind.
But instead of dropping
back a few lengths to pace
the frontrunner, the Jesse
Guce-guided Pugad Lawin
matched Hagdang Bato stride
for stride, both horses killing
the pace and trying to wear
each other down during the
long journey.
Fans expected Hagdang
Lawin in last years Gold Cup.

He suffered a cracked
heel for his efforts back then
but made a good recovery,
winning the Philracom
Commissioners Cup last
March.
Pugad Lawin, on the
strength of his being a giant
killer, was the far it would

in the Silver Cup, which
attracted five other entries.

People Power Revolution, the mile race was
PCSOs first major offering of the year.
It drew a high-powered cast, including
Tony Tans Pugad Lawin, which won the
2013 PCSO Presidential Gold Cup over the

heart-stopping competition.
Showtime was first out
of the gate, followed closely
by Enchanted and Jenz
Slasher two lengths away. At
the backstretch, Enchanted
grabbed the lead with Jebel
Ali and Jenz Slasher in
pursuit, the others biding
their time behind.
Both Showtime and Sky
Hook started moving up at the
far turn and ran head to head
down the stretch, an exciting
move that had racing fans

It was pretty close at

the wire, but the judges
declared it Sky Hook (a

It looked like a wire-to-wire
shoo-in for the leader, but to
everyones surprise, Driven

In 1973, or 42 years
ago, PCSO sponsored the
first Presidential Gold Cup.
Throngs of racing fans
visited the racetrack to see
the celebrated Sun God of
the late Don Pedro Cojuangco
Tony Tans Native Land, here with

Jesse Guce, won the Gold Cup in
2007.

premier jockey Elias Ordiales,
the acknowledged master of
the pace, guided Sun God,
which later became the
sire of a number of equally
excellent racehorses.
The initial success
encouraged PCSO to make
the Presidential Gold Cup an
annual event, the culmination
PCSO Presidential Gold Cup: From Sun God to Hagdang Bato
n 7 Oct. 1973, the PCSO Presidential Gold Cup was

first run through the efforts of the late Capt. Nereo C.
Andolong [then-PCSO chairman] at the old San Lazaro
Hippodrome in Tayuman.
It was witnessed by a jampacked crowd and the muchtalked-about race involved side-bets in the race track. It
was the face-off of perennial crowd favoritesIlocos King
and Sun God.
The racing fans witnessed the expert handling by
jockey Elias Ordiales of Sun God, crossing the wire on a
muddy track and going on to defeat Ilocos King with jockey
Cresencio Leona aboard. Sun God proved that a previous
win of his over Ilocos King was not a fluke.
Ilocos King, owned by Constante Rubio, tasted his
second consecutive defeat at the Philippine Racing Club,
Inc.(PRCI) Horse of the Year race at Santa Ana Park. Sun
God, owned by Don Pedro Cojuangco, clocked 2:19 for the
distance of 2,000 meters at the old San Lazaro Hippodrome.
Its possible that if the Presidential Gold Cup at the
time was not limited to horses that had never won the
race before, Sun God would have been the first horse to
achieve the first ever back-to-back victories.
On 5 Oct. 1974, Ilocos King with jockey Cresencio
became the second horse to win the Presidential Gold
Cup. He set the fastest winning time of 2:17 and broke the
record of Sun God. The crowd at San Lazaro Hippodrome
went wild when the official time was announced in the
public address system. Racing fans were clamoring for a
one-on-one or match race but it didnt push through.
On 2 Nov. 1975, Hennas Gold, owned by Ric Poblete
and ridden by Andres Camba, became the third horse
to win the Presidential Gold Cup and equalled the track
record of Ilocos King.
The following year, Fiorella, owned by Gretchen
Cojuangco and ridden by Jesus Guce, erased the old track
record of Ilocos King and Hennas Gold.
Gypsy Grey, owned by Canlubang Sugar Estate,
attempted three times before becoming a winner in the
Presidential Gold Cup. He posted a second place finish
against Fiorella in 1976 and another second place to

Sun Dancer, a progeny of Fair and Square, duplicated

the same feat in 1989 and 1990.
On 6 Dec. 2009, Don Enrico dominated the 37th
Presidential Gold Cup. He came away not only with the
biggest purse of his entire career but also denied Ibarra
the chance for a back-to-back victory in the Presidential
Gold Cup at the San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona,
Cavite.
The following year, Ibarra competed in the Presidential
Gold Cup but Yes Pogi won the race. Ibarra finished fourth
behind Righthererightnow and Go Army. It was one of
Ibarras unplaced finishes in his racing career.
On 1 Dec. 2013 at SLLP, Hagdang Bato, the halfbrother of Ibarra, sought to become the sixth horse
gunning for a back-to-back victory in the Presidential Gold
Cup (which Ibarra failed to accomplish) but lost to Pugad
Lawin. Hagdang Bato finished fourth behind My Champ
and Boss Jaden. It was also one of Hagdang Batos
unplaced finishes.

A Holy Mass was held,followed by speeches

from GM Rojas, Guild of Executives and
Managers of Sweepstakes (GEMS) President
Conrado C. Zabella, and Sweepstakes
Employees Union (SEU) President Joel
Pastores. The ceremonial groundbreaking and
laying of a time capsule followed after.
The time capsule contains memorabilia
such as the project brief, Lotto draw balls,
Lotto and Sweepstakes tickets, tokens from
each of the directors, and other items that
hopefully will prove of interest to posterity.
The opening of the time capsule has been
set for 20 years from now, on PCSOs 100th
anniversary.
Whats going to rise at the PCSOs San
Marcelino property?
The PCSO Board of Directors has envisioned
a three-building complex to be called the PCSO
Center. One building will be dedicated to charity
services, another to the gaming sector, and the
third for executive and administrative offices.

PCSO to move back to San Marcelino
The San Marcelino site, which covers

1.1 hectares, will also have ample space for
public and employees parking.
All aspects of design and construction will
be bid out, with the project to be completed
by 2018, if not sooner.
The San Marcelino property was acquired
on 8 Oct. 1962 from the Manila Club for P1.8
million pesos. It was PCSOs first real property

under its name.
The agency was housed in one building
there until 1995, when the head office
transferred to the Quezon Institute building on
E. Rodriguez Ave., Quezon City. The Security
Printing and several other departments
remained at San Marcelino.
In 2010, upon the Department of Public
Works and Highwayss advice of earthquake
risk, the PCSO head office was transferred to
the PICC Complex in Pasay City.
Because the Asia Pacific Economic
Conference Summit will be held at PICC in
2015 and renovations need to be made to the
facilities there, PCSO moved to a building in
Mandaluyong City, where it is temporarily
staying until the PCSO Center is constructed.
But wherever PCSOs offices are located,
and at all times, PCSO employees have served
the people without fail, delivering medicaland health-care related assistance to those
who need it, when they need it.
The governments charity agency now
comes home to Manila, where the public
may easily and conveniently submit their
requests for medical- and healthcare-related
assistance and avail of other services and
products.
As it celebrates eighty years of service,
PCSO as an agency remains dedicated, now
and always, to its mission of charity.
And now there remain faith, hope, and
charity, these three: but the greatest of these
is charity. 1st Corinthians 13:13.
The PCSO Property at San Marcelino, Manila: A Brief History

he PCSO lot in San

Marcelino, Manila was the first
property acquired by the agency.
It consists of three parcels of land
with a total area of11,963.06 sq.m.
Formerly owned by the Manila
Club - a general partnership of
Ross, Selph & Carrascoso, and
Sycip, Gorres, Velayo & Co. -it
was offered by Manila Clubs
Board of Trustees to the PCSOs
Board of Directors for sale.
After a series of negotiations,
on October 9, 1962, the PCSO
Board, headed by Chairman
Vicente G. Martinez, with
endorsement from the Office
of the President thru Executive
Secretary Salvador L. Marino,

under Board Resolution No.
404 approved the full payment
of Php 1,800,000 representing
acceptance of Manila Clubs offer.
The Deed of Sale was executed
on October 10, 1962 in Manila
in favour of Philippine Charity
Sweepstakes Office. It was signed
by Atty. Antonio T. Carrascoso
Jr., in behalf of Ross, Selph &
Carrascoso; Mr. Ramon Gorres, in
behalf of Sycip, Gorres, Velayo &
Co.; Mr. Vicente G. Martinez, PCSO
Chairman; Atty. Ignacio SantosDiaz, Vice-Chairman and General
Manager; and Atty. Conrado V.
Matutina, PCSO Secretary.
Necessary preparations for

the transfer of the property were
immediately made and several
improvements followed thereafter.
A few decades later, the number
of its employees grew so that
the agency needed to move to
a more spacious place. It was
moved to Quezon City in 1997,
then to Pasay City in 2010, and to
Mandaluyong City in 2014. Still,
some departments remained in
the old San Marcelino Office.
After 17 years of being away,
the PCSO will be coming back
home, and proof of this was the
ground breaking ceremony held
on September 8, 2014.

PCSO Presidential Gold Cup with the Philippine Racing Commission (Philracom) and host track Manila Jockey Club.

the Villa San Miguel Chapel,
Archbishop Palace, Mandaluyong
City. The PCSO employees thanked
God for the blessings bestowed upon
the agency and asked for grace and
strength in doing charitable works.

Archdiocese of Manila, with
eight concelebrants. During
the mass, he lauded the
agency for being a source of
hope through its charitable
undertakings. He reminded
the employees that the Lord
is the source of love, and we
are the instruments in doing
charity works which manifest

Dedicated employees of PCSO were
recognized during the flag raising ceremony

Conservatory Shaw Building, Mandaluyong
City.

service awardees this year who have been
serving PCSO for 10 to 34 years.

Aware of the financial difficulties of Mang
Bonifacio, the consultant from PGH endorsed
his case to PCSO. The agency is been
recognized for itscharitable assistance to the
underprivileged sectors of society who are
in need of financial and medical aidthrough
its Individual Medical Assistance Program
(IMAP).
PCSO IMAPs main objective is to assist
disadvantaged individuals with medical and
health problems achieve physical recovery
and restore them to normal social functioning
by providing medical assistance.
On July 22, Mang Bonifacio,together with
his wife Aling Rosita, unmindful of the
continuous rains and with the hope that he
would be granted financial assistance for
the purchase of the hearing aid devices he
needs,submitted the required documents to a
social service worker of PCSO.
After going through the process of
evaluation and verification of documents and
interview, Mang Bonifacio in the next four
days, will hopefully have improved hearing
and will be productive again as PCSO grants
his request for a hearing enhancer.

onifacio dela Cruz Jr. is a 67-yearold retired OFW. He worked as a truck

driver in Saudi Arabia. For sixteen
years Mang Bonifacio endured being away
from his wife and eight children to provide for
the increasing financial needs of his family.
Since his retirement in 1998, his family has
been noticing signs of his weakening hearing
ability.
He would watch television with high
volume and would become unreasonably
sensitive, leading to fights with his wife and
grandchildren because of misunderstandings.
Aling Rosita and their children incessantly
encouraged him to seek medical help but to
no avail.
After more than a decade of convincing,
Mang Bonifacio finally agreed to consult
a specialist and wass recently diagnosed
to have a bilateral moderate to severe
sensorineural hearing loss, sloping to
profound hearing loss at high frequency.
Sensorineural losses can sometimes be
helped by drugs, but in most cases, a hearing
aid is the most effective way to improve
hearing.
A hearing aid is an electroacoustic medical
device designed to amplify sound for the
wearer, with the aim of making speech more
intelligible and to correct impaired hearing.
Each unit costs P18,000.00 to P19,000.00.
A specialist from the Ear Unit of
the Philippine General Hospital (PGH)
recommended the use ofa behind-the-ear
digital convention hearing aid for Mang
Bonifacio as treatment. The use of hearing
aids may not bring back Mang Bonifacios
normal hearing ability, but it can make his
communication, social interaction, work, and
daily activities easier and more enjoyable.
However, the prohibitive cost of the device
and their financial constraint made the family
desperate for help. Since his retirement, the
PCSO employees rocked

Zumba workout on October

Shaw Plaza Building, Shaw
Boulevard, Mandaluyong City.

In 1968, under the
stewardship of Chairman Manuel
Barretto, Atty. Romy Pefianco
decided that PCSO needed a corporate
logo that was attractive and symbolic
while capturing the agencys mission,
vision, and mandate.

contributed to the design
of the prestigious
trophy.
The first sketches
of the logo reflected a
black and white design.
The final version of

the logo used the colors
of the Philippine flag,
signifying PCSOs presence
nationwide. The original eight
provincial district offices
are Pangasinan, Legaspi,
Iloilo, Cebu, Cagayan de
Oro, Davao, Tacloban, and
Zamboanga.
Since then, PCSO has been
using the same powerful and
distinctive logo, recognizable
to people all over the country
as the sign for hope and help
during times of need.

eight (8) original provincial
offices of PCSO. The original
