Study Abroad 101


Studying abroad is about much more than just visiting another country. It is an opportunity to advance yourselfpersonally, educationally, professionally, and socially. UWM offers a variety of programs all over the world that include both English speaking and
non-English speaking opportunities.
Earn college credit, use financial aid, and build your resume!

Getting Started
Walk-in peer advising is available without an appointment during our business hours, Mon-Fri 8:00am-4:30pm in Pearse Hall
166. Just stop in to start your discussion about studying abroad!
General advising sessions are available every semester to learn and ask questions about which program may be best for
you, the study abroad application process, how to finance your program, and academic questions. Check our website for

Applying for a passport should be done well in advance! Passport photos can be taken in our office for competitive prices.
Some programs also require a visa. Follow this link to apply for a passport or renew online, http://travel.state.gov/

Program Basics
Short-term programs are offered during summer and winter terms, run for 2-6 weeks and are often led by UWM faculty.
Semester and year-long programs are offered in a variety of locations and languages.
Non-UWM programs are not sponsored by UWM but are offered through different universities or program providers. You
must apply with our office for these programs to ensure your credits transfer and you can utilize your financial aid.

Application Process and Deadlines


The application process for all students starts at mypantherabroad.uwm.edu, where students can explore programs and
complete the online application.
Deadlines for UWM and non-UWM study abroad and exchange programs are:
-October 1: spring semester programs
-October 15: UWinteriM programs (check program pages for exceptions)
-March 1: academic year and fall semester programs
-March 15: summer programs
Deadlines and application materials can vary by program so it is important to be aware of your programs specific requirements.

Financing Your Experience Abroad


Financial aid can be used and most UWM scholarships can be used
The UWM Financial Aid Office assists students in finding sufficient financial resources including loans, grants and scholarships
for study abroad and exchange programs.
Even if you do not receive financial aid, make sure to file your FAFSA without it you wont be eligible for aid.
It is important to note that almost always, study abroad scholarship applicants receive notification of an award AFTER applying
and being accepted to their program.
