out in a charge on Aug 8
and was seen the the
witness. He, together with a
party of men, was sent to
draw the Turkish fire at a
spot to the right of Hill 60,
where the trenches were far
apart. The men fell under
the furious fire. They fell a
good way, in most cases,
from the Turkish lines. It was
terriable, the men were
falling like rabbits. Many
were calling out for their
mother and sisters. It is
highly improbable that any
could be prisoners of war,
as they were too far from the
Turks for that to happen.
Later the Turks came over
the ground as the battalion
retired still further. The
above man was never seen
again".

was 319 Pte Edward Francis Fowles
who enlised on 22 Aug 1914.
Edward went to Egypt, however
was returned to Aust on 3 Feb
1915 and was discharged on 8 Apr
1915. He appears to have died
soon after. His father WIlliam
appears to have believed that his
death was as a result of his service.
Sadly he died after his discharge
and was not entilte to any benifits.
Mother Jane Fowles died in 1920.

unfortunatly the exploded 100 yards in front of the

were met with shrapnel and machine gun fire and

from Melbourne aboard HMAT Benalla
(A24) on 19 October 1914. On 8 May 1915,
he was killed in action on Gallipoli
Peninsula, Turkey, aged 26. He is buried in
the Lone Pine Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Phillip Wales war a sergeant at

embarkation and was appointed to 2nd Lt
on 28th Apr 1915. He brother was Keith
Wale of 22Bn, wounded in 1918.
may have been related to CPL raymond
Durston from Poowong. RTA 1919. It would
appear that at one time both Ray and
Norman lived in StKilda. Both had Sydney
Frederick Durston listed as NOK. Their
father

Mates appear to have auctioned of his kit,

then sent the Money (6pounds) back to his
family. Lt Belcher of the 1st Lt Hourse Bde
organised for his brother to forward

Aug. Pte L J Duncan wrote on 21 Jan 1916. "
Was with witness in charge on Lone Pine
trenches and witness saw his fall nearly across
to Turkish trench, he fell straight out as if killed.
They captured and held four lines of trenches, he
never reached them. Could not collect their
wounded although they trien with chains. Not
more than 6 yards away when he fell. Feel sure
he was dead from the way he fell. Could see
many dead bodies on both sides of the
communication sap.

Pte P M Fyfe (ex 14 Bn) state:" Informant states the

casuality was a friend of his, and he was with the
casuality on the 8 Aug at Suvla Bay when anattack
wasmade. Informant was the last man to see casuality.
Inthe morninginformant said to him "Jack will you take
a bullet or abayonet?" Casuality said "Ill take a bullet".
Informent waited for casuality on the top of the trench,
but did not see him dead. Informant is strongly of
opinion that casuality was killed, because informant got
our bullet wounds there and there was a perfect hail of
bullets there, no one could live in it.

In 1919 this man was declared to be an illegal

absentee by a court of inquirey (absent from
June 1915). In 1921 the Adjutant General
reconsidered the case with new evidance now
available and recorded Pte Makin as KIA and
that all records regarding illegal absence be
expunged. Pte Makin was John McVicers uncle
