Visual and Performing Arts Reflection

After reading from the visual and performing framework, I need to have full knowledge
in the areas of music, dance, theatre and visual arts. I need an understanding of media
applications, techniques, and processes and knowledge of structures and functions. I need to
know how to choose, evaluate a range of subject, symbols and ideas. I need to understand how
art has a relationship to history and cultures and how to reflect, assess characteristics and merits
of works of art. I need to know how to make connections between visual arts and other
disciplines like mathematics and engineering.
Classes at CSUDH and my field/classroom experiences have prepared me to be a
successful visual and performing arts teacher at the elementary level. I have had years of hands
on practice in helping students create art projects. I have worked as a crafts artisan and let arts
and workshops for children as well as adults. I have several years of college level studio art and
art history. I successfully completed ART 301, Arts and Crafts for the non-major. I have been an
aspiring artist since my early teen years and might have considered majoring in art at one time.
In my earlier college years, I took several music classes. Coming from a musical family, I
learned to sing, play piano and saxophone. These skills will serve me well in an elementary
classroom. My class instruction and projects and individual preparation and training leave me
feeling well prepared overall.,
The areas I feel less prepared in are the specific pedagogical skills and methods of
teaching the arts. The only class that has specifically taught me the discipline of art in the
elementary classroom is ART 301. I need to learn more about the artwork of ethnic groups
around the world that are a part of the elementary school curriculum. I feel that before a student
graduates, they should have a huge arsenal of lesson plans and practice writing a multitude of
lesson plans before being given a teaching job.

The artifact I have that best represents what I have learned in the visual arts is a
childrens book I wrote and illustrated and bound by hand. The assignment was given in ART
301 and I took the challenge to heart. Having read many stories to children as a media specialist,
I felt I wanted to use colorful drawings, the use of rhyme and humor to keep the attention and
interest of children. I also incorporated the California 1st grade standard of comparing and
contrasting of animals so it would also be meaningful curriculum. A similar project on a smaller
scale for 5th graders would fulfill their standard of Visual Literacy, 5.3 which is to construct
diagrams, maps, graphs, timelines, and illustrations to communicate ideas or tell a story about a
historical event.
