Definition
Sleep is a condition of body and mind that
need it every night and several hour.
- the nervous system: inactive
- the eyes: close

Misconceptions about sleep

BY:
Jitrawan Jaroensintaweekul
&
Pichayatida Srisakulpinyo

Misconception 1
Sleep is time for the body in general and the brain
specifically to shut down for rest.
There is no evidence that any major organ or regulatory
system in
the body shuts down during sleep. In REM sleep ( Rapid eye
movement), any parts of the brain are as active as at any
time when
awake.
Endocrine system and also delta waves increases
dramatically.

Misconception 2
Getting just one hour less sleep per night than needed
will not have any effect on daytime functioning.
If your sleep hour is less than an individual needs, It
will cause a sleep debt .
If the debt becomes too great, it can lead to problem
sleepiness.
Although the individual may not realize his or her
sleepiness, the sleep debt can have powerful effects on
daytime performance, thinking, and mood.

Misconception 3
The body adjusts quickly to different sleep schedules.

The biological clock that controls a persons sleep/wake

cycle will
attempt to function according to a normal day/night schedule
even
when that person tries to change it.

Misconception 4
People need less sleep as they grow older.
In fact, older people dont need less sleep, but they often
get less
sleep. Older people also have more fragile sleep and are
more easily
disturbed.

Misconception 5
good nights sleep can cure problems with excessive
daytime
sleepiness.
Excessive daytime sleepiness can be associated with a
sleep
disorder or other medical condition.
Extra sleep may not eliminate daytime sleepiness that
may be due to such disorders.

Sleep patterns
- Newborn babies have an average sleep
about 16-18 hours.
- The children around 3-5 years old have a
total sleep about 10-12 hours.
- Adulthood have 7-8 hours for
sleep per day.

Sleep patterns
You can see that when you are older your
hour of sleep decrease. As your age changed,
your pattern of sleep changed.

Sleep patterns:(
For instance, infants fall asleep directly to
REM stage. And spend 50 percent of their sleep
time in this stage. But childhood and adulthood
dont.

3.9 Evolution of Sleep

Palmy & Po

Sleep Habits
>>Unihemispheric: means when the animal is sleeping, one side of its brain
is sleeping, but another side is awake. You can easily found in some
mammals and some birds that usually travel across the ocean.
>>Unihemispheric sleep allows aquatic mammals, such as dolphin, to sleep,
swim, and surface to breath at the same time. It also allows animals to
keep track of other group members and watch for predators.
>>Some mammals sleep at night, some sleep during the day. Most of small
animals sleep more than bigger animals. In some cases, animals develop
their ways of sleeping depend of their daily lives. Some mammals have
unihemispheric, but some not

Sleep Pattern
>>Mammals: When mammals sleep, they have a cycle of alternating
between NREM and REM states. The duration spent in NREM and REM
states are different in each animal.
>>Birds: Birds have NREM and REM states. NREM sleep is about 1.5 or 2
minutes and REM sleep is about 9 seconds. Because birds stand and perch
while sleeping, so they dont lose their muscle tone during REM sleep.
>>Reptiles: Most scientists have failed to test on REM sleep in reptiles, so
they suggest that REM sleep may be later developed in warm-blooded
animals.

Sleep Postures
There are many postures are seen, such as
:curled up: dogs, cats, and many other animals
:standing: horses, birds
:hanging upside down: bats
:straddling a tree branch: leopard
:lying down: humans

Sleep Places
There are many places animals sleep, such as
:burrows: rabbits
:open spaces: lions
:underwater: hippopotami
:nests: gorillas

3.10 Sleep loss and wakefulnes

Jiratchaya Sakulboonthanom (Japan)

Kanokphit Sitth (Toa)

3.10 Sleep loss and wakefulness 2/5

Sleep loss (sleep deprivation) is the
condition of not having enough sleep.
Wakefulness is daily recurring brain state
and state of consciousness.

3.10 Sleep loss and wakefulness 3/5

Who have high risk of problem
sleepiness?
Adolescents and shift workers
Why?
Sleep deprivation
The desynchronized timing of sleep
and wakefulness

3.10 Sleep loss and wakefulness 4/5

Effects
Lower stress threshold
Affects virtually all physiological functions
Impaired memory
Impaired creativity and innovation
High risk of drowsy-driving crashes

3.10 Sleep loss and wakefulness 5/5

How to prevent sleep loss and wakefulness?
Try to not take a naps during the day.
Try to go to sleep at the same time each night.
Avoid caffeine which includes coffee and tea.

Dream
Smita Jirayingcharoen (Mudmee)
Pinsinee Mekpanuwat (Pin)

Dream occurs when people have deep

sleep and NREM sleep as well.
People normally dream around 2 hours per
night with REM sleep.

Some dreams are the memories of people

because of
unusual nature. In fact, no one konw the
source of
dream content.

REM and dream may not associate,

as seen after taking medicine or
brian problem from using scanning
techniques to estimate brain
activities.

While dreaming, the brain is inactive

including
regulate intelligence, conscious thought, and
higherorder reasoning. higher-order is the function
that
work for processing experiences to your brain
while
you are awake.

Physical changes during sleep

Physical Change
People spending 1 of 3 of their life sleeping
Many physical change occur during sleep

There are 2 state.

1. REM
2. NREM

REM [Rapid Eye Movement]

Is a stage of sleep which can characterized
by random movement of eyes

REM [Rapid Eye Movement]

During this state of sleep that can be
characterized by increases in
o
o
o

blood pressure
heart rate
metabolism

NREM [Non-Rapid Eye Movement]

During this state it different from REM
This state only have little or no eye
movement

NREM [Non-Rapid Eye Movement]

During this state of sleep is characterized by
decrease in
o
o
o
o

muscle tone
heart rate
respiration
blood pressure

How to characterize?
It use one machine that will tell you the result
of each category
Then compare to the average to see he or
she stay in which state.

Sleep
Tanadech Santipiyakun (Owen)
Thana Tanakanokkul (Time)

- Sleep is important and it is

related to surviving.
In human, not enough sleep can
cause to appearent state of
paranola and hallucinations and
other health problems.

- Sleep is the process that give

the brain some rest.
The theory of sleeping is to top
up its energy stores and mainly
repair itself after a period that
energy breakdown.

There are several physiological changes occur

during sleep. The body repair and restore energy.
Sleeping also help us to clear the unneeded
energy.

Scientist still do not fully understand the

function of sleep, though many hypothesis have
been advance to explain this nescessary and
nataural behavior.

Hypothesis: Restoration and recovery of body

systems.
Hypothesis: Energy conservation (This Theory
states the we sleep to save energy)
Hypothesis: Memory consolidation (The idea is
that sleeping support learning and memory.
Hypothesis: Protection from predation (Stable
during sleep may got caught by predator)
Hypothesis: Brain development (
Hypothesis: Discharge of emotions.

Hypothesis: Protection from predation (Stable

during sleep may got caught by predator)
Hypothesis: Brain development (This proposed
function of sleep is related to REM sleep).
Hypothesis: Discharge of emotions (Dreaming
during REM sleep provides a safe discharge of
emotions.

Sleep Disorder

By:
Samitra Ngenpisutsin
Kavitsara Panichumnuaysuk

What is sleep disorder?

Have problem in sleeping. Feel sleepy in the
wrong time, cant sleep at night or hard
sleep.

Insomnia
Characterize is hard to sleep at night or waking up
during at night and hard going back to sleep.
- short-term insomnia may cause by emotional or
physical discomfort.Second insomnia may cause by
result from combination of physical or mental.
- Treatment may following the nighttime routine or
reduce caffeine or improve sleep environment .

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

The problem about breathing system which breathing
interrupted during sleep. That cause high blood
pressure, morning headaches and stroke.

Restless Legs syndrome (RLS)

legs feel unpleasant while sleeping.Leg will feel like have
some thing on it or feel like have an electrical shock.
who have this syndrome will feel better when moving
leg.

Parasomnias
This disease is like a nightmare. Most found in children
more than adult.Cause of this disease is the brain is
growing so, it try to work at night too.
-sleep walking, sleep talking
-bedwetting

Narcolepsy
Feel sleepy all day can sleep in every place every time.
cause of this disease is chemical in the brain
Hypocretin(chemical make you weak) have a problem.
Men have a chance to be Narcolepsy more than women.

Does your brain sleep when

you do?
For one night, we are dream amount five time.
Our brain always active. Not except the time
that we sleep. The brain will active, when we
dream same as we awake.

Sometime sleeping
gives the brain and body
time to remake the
energy for day's events.

These waves show a person's brain activity when

sleep.

Homeostasis and Sleep

By
Jiramet Techasuppatrakun(Wyn)
and
Kandit kernwiriyaskul(Kan)

Definition of homeostasis
The understanding of relationship of circadian
rhythms to sleep. Continuing studies in genetics
and molecular biology promise further advances in
our knowledge of how the circadian clock works
and how a succession of behavioral states adapt
to changes in light/dark cycles.

Neurotransmitter
What science does know is that the
action of serve-signaling molecules and
of nerve cells (neurons) located in the
brainstem and at the base of the brain
determines whether we are asleep or
awake.

The pressure to sleep grows stronger across the day as

one stays awake and then dissipates when one sleeps at
night (shaded area).
