Lingaa is a 2014 Indian Tamil action-drama film directed by K.S.

Ravikumar, who
also scripted the film in collaboration with the film's dialogue writer, Pon Kum
aran. The film stars Rajinikanth playing a dual role, Jagapati Babu, Anushka She
tty and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles. Music was composed by A. R. Rahman,[4]
[5] while cinematography was headed by R. Rathnavelu. The movie was filmed in Ta
mil, with dubbed versions in Telugu and Hindi.[6]
Principal photography commenced during the last week of May, 2014 in Mysore. The
majority of the filming took place in Ramoji Film City. The climax portions wer
e filmed in Shimoga.
The film was released on 12 December 2014, coinciding with Rajinikanth's birthda
y,[7] and was an average grosser at the box office.[8][9]

Plot
The movie is set in the fictional village of Solaiyur and revolves around a dam
which is the lifeline for the village. The dam is under assessment for structura
l integrity by the Public Works Department. The local minister has corrupt inten
tions and wants to make money through a new dam project.
The villagers want to perform a special Pooja to pray to the God Shiva. They dec
ide to invite the grandson of Maharaja Lingeswaran who commissioned the dam and
the temple. They believe the return of the line of the Maharaja will solve the p
roblems surrounding the dam. Lingaa (played by Rajinikanth in contemporary time)
is the grandson of Maharaja Lingeswaran. His family has fallen on hard times an
d he is now a petty thief in the city. He is angry with his grandfather for squa
ndering away the family fortune so he is unwilling to go to Solaiyur to preside
over the temple function. However, circumstances force him to accept the invitat
ion and travel to Solaiyur.
Through a flashback sequence, Lingaa comes to know that his grandfather, Lingesw
aran (also played by Rajinikanth, set in 1939) was an altruist. Lingeswaran had
spent his entire fortune to build the dam against all odds during the British Ra
j. But the people of Solaiyur had mistaken his intentions which forced him to le
ave Solaiyur and move to the city.
Lingaa repents his ways and understands the great sacrifices made by his grandfa

ther for the public good. In the final act, Lingaa exposes the Minister's greed
to the villagers and saves the dam from an aerial bomb attack.
