Letter of reference for:

Charles Roth

January 8, 2015
To Whom It May Concern:
I have known Charles Roth as his direct supervisor for the last two and a half years. Charlie is a
hard-working, intelligent, reflective, and caring professional, whose leadership and collaboration
skills have been an asset to our school both in and out of the classroom since I have known him.
I have had the opportunity to observe Charlie in the classroom on many occasions. What stands out most
when observing Charlie's class is that the students are fully engaged in their work at all times. His
students clearly understand his classroom expectations, and Charlie has instilled in them a strong
desire to meet those expectations.
During my meetings with Charlie about his lessons and teaching ,
Charlie has been very reflective. When things go well, he is truly happy, but when things don 't go
according to plan, Charlie is very thoughtful, and tries to figure out what went wrong and what he
could have done differently to inform his own teaching and become a more successful practitioner of
his craft. For example, this year Charlie has a challenging class of students. He found that his usual
methods of teaching were not successful. He therefore researched and piloted a new way of teaching in
one of his classes, a flipped classroom and he eventually decided to implement this method of
teaching in his other math classes as well.
Because Charlie is the math department leader, I have also had the chance to work with Charlie on one
our school leadership teams. He has shown to be a strong leader, helping other teachers get on board
with different school-wide initiatives. As the math team leader he has the responsibility to
facilitate weekly meetings with the other math teachers at the school and lead the team to collaborate
on department-wide inquiry projects and performance-based assessment tasks.
Lastly, it is important to note that last year, Charlie organized and led the first international
student trip in our schools history.
He organized this two-week trip to Panama because he is a
strong believer in experiential learning, and he wanted students to share his passion of experiencing
another culture while learning about ecology, history, and the Spanish language.
The trip was a great
success, and Charlie is in the midst of planning a similar trip this year for a new group of students.
In sum, Charlie Roth has been an asset to our school community and I strongly recommend him for your
consideration for any position opening.
Sincerely,
