Study guide for Chapter 1: Unit 1 The Northeast Region

We read about and discussed all of this in class.


GEOGRAPHY:

pages 132-141

*Appalachians Mountains - stretch from Maine to Alabama


*much of the land formed by glaciers- large moving sheets of ice dug out
the land, when ice melted - lakes were formed
*coast dotted with bays and harbors - made easy for settlers to anchor large cities grew up in these areas - Baltimore, Maryland, New York
*forests - natural resource - used to build homes, canoes, furniture, and for
fuel and to make paper, and maple syrup
*fall lines - where the land drops then flattens into a plain - usually by a
waterfall
*water used for making electricity, trap lobsters, clams, and oysters, fish,
*mountains provide minerals like coal
*Northeast has 4 seasons, but they differ within the region One thing all
the states share is precipitation in the form of rain and snow.
*leaves on broad leaf trees change color when temperatures drop - many
tourists come to view the colored leaves each year

ECONOMY: pages 143-149


*natural resources play an important part in the economy of the NE - trees
for fuel, homes, furniture and paper
*fish from lakes, rivers, and oceans - trap lobster, crabs, oysters

ECONOMY:
*farms grow fruits and vegetables - raise dairy cattle for milk, cheese,
yogurt
*manufacturing - built machines to weave cloth - large textile mills grew in
area
*industry grew and many left the rural farms, moved into the big cities to
work in factories because they could make more money
*service industry - largest industry in the United States - tourists come to
view leaves and make maple syrup

*has smallest area of land, but the largest number of people
*first cities began with ports, harbors where ships landed with goods to
trade and new people to settle
*urban - farms and land in the country
*suburban - a community near a large city

*culture - the history, language, religion, customs, ways a people did things
*each culture brought its one foods, history, art, religion, and ways of life to
the northeast
*the first people were the native americans - Iroquois - they grew maize
(corn), beans, squash, and ate wild plants they tapped the maple trees for
maple syrup also hunted deer and used deer hides for clothing

*people sailed from England to make a better life, also from the
Netherlands settled in New York, people form Sweden settled Delaware,
people from Germany settled in Pennsylvania
*diverse means variety, the population of the northeast is diverse immigrants, people coming to america, arrived in the northeast and first
came to Ellis Island
*festivals and celebrations tell us about the culture of the people living in an
area the festivals are full of food, dancing and parades to show their culture
