Helpingverbshavenomeaningontheirown.Theyarenecessaryforthe
grammaticalstructureofasentence,buttheydonottellusverymuchalone.We
usuallyusehelpingverbswithmainverbs.They"help"themainverb(whichhas
therealmeaning).Thereareonlyabout15helpingverbsinEnglish,andwedivide
themintotwobasicgroups:
