Who We Are?
ADEL (Advanced Dynamic spectrum 5G mobile networks Employing Licensed shared
access) is a European Research collaborative project, supported by the EC, under the
CNECT-ICT-619647 grant.

Consortium:

University of Edinburgh (Coordinator) - Dr. T. Ratnarajah

Athens Information Technology (Tech. Coordinator.) - Dr. C. Papadias
Thales Communication and Security - Dr. N. Haziza
Technical University Darmstadt - Dr. M. Pesavento
Intel Mobile Communications GmbH - Dr. V. Frascolla
EURECOM - Dr. D. Slock
Trinity College Dublin - Dr. L. Doyle
Portugal Telecom Inovaco SA - Dr. A. Gomes

VISION: We see virtualization as a key characteristic in 5G that will change the

way we think about traditional mobile operators and their business models.
Virtualization has the potential to create the illusion of unlimited network resources,
in particular spectrum.

ADEL View
Conservative. NRAs and stakeholders
view LSA as a sharing framework
without CR capabilities, with the
purpose of providing mobile operators
with additional spectrum.

Broader perspective. ADEL takes a

more open view on LSA than the
current regulators interpretation.

We view LSA as an evolution of the

CR concept where LSA licensees are
more controlled so that QoS can be
guaranteed to both PU (incumbents)
and SU (LSA licensees).

As a research project, we are seeking

ways to achieve this in a more
dynamic regime, using advanced
techniques such as collaborative and
DB assisted sensing, beamforming,
CoMP, interference alignment, etc.

Key Idea
To explore the potential of LSA as a key
enabler of 5G mobile broadband networks.
By developing:
1) Collaborative and database assisted sensing techniques
achieving sensitivity requirements set by regulatory authorities at a
minimum communication overhead between collaborating nodes;
2) Dynamic, radio-aware resource allocation
distributed and centralized processes offering desired network features
such as scalability, trust-control, efficiency, etc.
3) Cooperative communication
dense LSA, small-cell based and hierarchical networks
With the final goal of providing:
An order of magnitude improvement in spectral efficiency, more energy
and cost efficient mobile broadband networks

ADEL Reference Scenarios

A number of scenarios covering the full range of:

Low High Mobility

Low High LSA Dynamics
Macro cell and small cell deployments
Reconfiguration capability
Shared Infrastructure: pool of virtual resources, servicedriven networks, MVNOs as LSA licensees, trading
between resources.
Incumbents, existing operator licensees and new entrant
operators
2.3 GHz band, 700MHz, 1452-1492 MHz, 1.5 GHz,
1980-2010/2170-2200 MHz, 3.8-4.2MHz, 5GHz

LSA Repository
LSA Controller
Collaborative spectrum
sensing network (sensor,
aggregators, coordinator)

Integration with
3GPP

new functional modules

3GPP interfaces
3GPP RRC messages

Final Results Expected

Spectral efficiency: a factor of 10 is aimed at.
Energy efficiency: also a factor of 10 is anticipated.
Cost: at least a factor of 10 improvement for mobile data traffic via the
use of small cells with LSA.
Experimental platforms: are expected to show some of these gains
over-the-air, as well as over large-scale system level simulations.

Summary
ADEL will design LSA network architectures and address
several technical challenges to enable flexible and efficient
spectrum usage for mobile broadband communications.
ADEL will develop advanced LSA-based, collaborative sensing,
dynamic access and cooperative communication methods.
ADEL will take into account realistic technical, regulatory and
commercial constraints.
The project will target 5G mobile broadband systems with
improved radio transmission techniques, medium access control
protocols and will develop proof of-concept implementations of
the developed technologies.
