Chrome Moly material (code name KMD) is a product Elecon has developed in collaboration with West Germany. Hammer rings made of KMD have, over the past eight to ten years, gained popularity overn Mn Steel hammer rings, because of KMDs inherent qualities. KMD is ferric steel and has magnetic properties. In the event of breakage under abnormal working conditions, the broken peices carried along with the coal on the conveyor belts can be picked out by the magnetic separator. On the other hand, Mn steel is Nonmagnetic. It will not be picked out by the magnetic separator, and may result in major damage to the production line. So far, Mn Steel was preferred because it is tough and has excellent
wear resistance properties. However,
being basically soft, Mn Steel has to come into contact with reasonably hard material to attain this wear resistance. The hardness stipulation, as per the standards, is 229 BHN maximum. Once Mn Steel comes in contact with harder metals, instantaeous workhardening takes place on the surface of up to0.2-0.3 mm depth. After work-hardening, the hardness shoots up to 500-550 BHN, and wear resistance properties are achieved. In the event of workhardening not taking place, Mn Steel is susceptible to a faster rate of wear. KMD is better. Because it has a hardness of 400-450 BHN throught the section, and it allows workhardening on the surface. Because of the special heat treatment given to it, it is extra tough and withstands impacts. In fact, even
with the variations in the inputs the
wear rate does not change much. It has been observed that whenever coal is in an excessively wet condition, the wear rate in Mn Steel increases three fold. Because of the inconsistent quality of coal with an ash contect of up to 40% and siliceous matter exceeding 20%, the life span of Mn Steel hammer ring reduces substantially. As a result, down time and maintenance increases. It becomes very difficult to maintain the inventory of spares. KMD, on the other hand, has better life span even with wet coal. So, with the use of KMD, equipment safety is ensured. In addition, down time is minimised and inventory of spares can be optimised. ELECONS KMD HAMMER RINGS. IT IS QUALITY THAT MATTERS.
