The threefold division of the law is not only a Christian construct. Judaism also
recognizes that there are distinctions to be made. The mid-twentieth century Jewish
writer, Boaz Cohen, notes that the divine law consists of ceremonialism, judicial=(civil),
ethics, morals, and finds this threefold division indicated in the words commandment
statutes and judgments' in Deuteronomy 6:1, (Now these are the commandments,
the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you,
that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:)
Part of the Jewish Law included the laws found in the Old Testament. When Paul said
that non-Jews, (Gentiles) are no longer bound by these laws, he is not saying the Old
Covenant laws do not apply today. He is saying, certain types of laws, as in the (over
600 Ceremonial laws and rituals), may not apply.
Ceremonial Law: This type of law related to Israel's worship. (Lev 1:1-13) The laws
pointed forward to Jesus Christ and were no longer necessary after Jesus' death and
resurrection. Though we are no longer bound to them, the principles behind the
ceremonial laws, to worship and love God, still apply. (see Romans 12:1-2)
Civil Law: This law dictated Israel's daily living (Deut 22-25); but modern society and
culture are so radically different that some of these guidelines cannot be followed
specifically. The principles behind the commands are to guide our conduct. (see Oral
laws)
Moral Law: The moral laws are direct commands of God. A good example is the Ten
Commandments (Ex 20:1-17). The moral laws reveal the nature and will of God, and
still apply to us today. We do not obey this moral law as a way to obtain salvation, but to
live in ways pleasing to God.
The Old Testament Law identifies sin and teaches the need for salvation;
Romans 4:15
Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
Romans 5:13
For until the law, sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
The Old Testament Law is where God reveals His nature, His will, and his lifestyle for
humanity, and his moral laws, and guidelines for living. But we cannot make it into the
kingdom of God by keeping that Law; we must be born again and trust in Jesus. Gods
laws were never meant to become extinct, it is perpetual; it was perfected and fulfilled
in Jesus Christ. God promised to put his laws inside of us, and this is achieved through
the Holy Spirit.
Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my
words: 15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of
the day. 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come
to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your
sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your
old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will
pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
Hebrews 10:15-16, Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he
had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith
the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; (Jer.
31:33)
he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus.) 17 Then laid they [their] hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
Acts 8:36-39, 36 And as they went on [their] way, they came unto a certain water: and
the eunuch said, See, [here is] water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip
said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I
believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand
still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he
baptized him. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord
caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
1 Corinthians 3:16,
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
1 Corinthians 6:19-20a,
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which
ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price:
1 Timothy 1:9,
Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and
disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of
fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers.
Your only freedom from the laws of sin and death is in Jesus Christ. You cannot do it on
your own. This is the reason so many people in the church are struggling with sin. The
Holy Ghost does not struggle with sin, so why should you. (For the law of the Spirit of
life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Rom. 8:2 )
1 John 3:7-10,
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even
as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the
beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might
destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for
his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the
children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not
righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
1 Corinthians 6:7-10
7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with
another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather [suffer yourselves to]
be defrauded? 8 Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that [your] brethren. 9 Know ye
not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither
fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with
mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortionist,
shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1 Corinthians 15:48-51
48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are
they also that are heavenly. 49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall
also bear the image of the heavenly. 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood
cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
51 Behold, I show you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
The sad thing is that after reading all of these scriptures and knowing what the word of
God is telling us; there are those that will still lean to their own understanding. People
believe that because of the grace of God they can live as they please. The scriptures are
plain and true; we need the spirit of God living in us to live in this world if we plan to
make it to eternal life. Grace is not a license to sin.
Romans 6, 1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not,
that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised
up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of
life.
Galatians 3:25-28, 25 But after that faith is come; we are no longer under a
schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many
of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor
Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one
in Christ Jesus.
1 Peter 3:21, The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the
putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,)
by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
Ephesians 2:8-9, 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was
not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the
altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made
perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was
imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see
then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also was
not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had
sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith
without works is dead also.
Revelation 21:5-8
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto
me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am
Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the
fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcomes shall inherit all things; and I will
be his God, and he shall be my son. 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the
abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all
liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the
second death.
Jude 24-25
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless
before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, 25 To the only wise God our Savior,
be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
You can be kept if you want to be kept; you must first let the spirit of God keep you. We
cannot do this on our own. LET GO AND LET GOD IN!!!!
