Module 01 Discussion 03 Reading by Anderson

1. Anderson briefly introduces some advantages of theory as well as some critiques of

theory. Of the positions on theory he discusses, which most closely approximates
your own beliefs or makes the most sense to you?
In reading the article by Anderson (2008) he emphasizes the challenge that theory allows us to
detect which mode of online learning is most effective. In my own beliefs the theory that makes
the most sense to me is the community-centered theory. This theory develops learners socially,
in this community-centered format a learning community is established and members are
supported and challenged to construct knowledge, there is a sense of a shared relationship that
the learner belongs to something much bigger than self. The participants are held accountable
for shared learning and the commitment of participation contributes to the overall community of
online learning. In a community-centered format there is collaborative learning going on, and it
contains behaviorist, constructive, and connectivity theories as well.
