Research Based Learning

Strategies (provide text
chapters/reference)

Learning strategy instruction

helps students become more
responsible for their own
success in school (Herrell
&Jordan, 2012, p. 233).

All strategies will be research based and from one of the texts. Please provide reference for each.

give the instructions to the students on the lesson.
select and match a strategy and curriculum that I would teach to the students.
have the students reflect on how they approach their learning tasks.

Presentation/ Learning Activities (Strategy Steps) Direct Method and the Proficiency-Oriented
Instruction (Horwitz, 2013). (includes language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies
, interaction, feedback

-I would model the strategy the model that I would use to teach the students.
-An example being I would prepare a questionnaire about using different strategies.
-The students would then fill out these questionnaires and the results would be calculated
and used as a foundation for discussion between the students in groups.
-This would be the opportunity for the students to practice using a strategy while filling out
the questionnaires.
Practice and Application

Direct Method and the Proficiency-Oriented Instruction (Horwitz,

2013).
(Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application, feedback)

-The students would then have the discussion about the using different strategies among
themselves.
-The students would also be able to make visuals for self-help for themselves.

-This would allow them to remember more easily the strategies that they talked about in
their discussion among themselves.
-The students would use these strategies in future classwork and projects.

Review and Assessment: (What specific assessment tools are being used)

The assessment tools that are being used would be in how the students display their
knowledge they learned in using various strategies. Also in how they made and use their
visual self-help in future class projects. Which is why knowing how various cognitive
strategies would be helpful to them. It would allow using the knowledge in a way that
allows that to further their own educational understanding of these strategies.
Extension:
What are your next steps for future lessons?

To give further information on what strategies are available to the students and how they
can be used. For example note taking would help for test preparation. I would also have the
students use the strategies they learned since it would help them in their future educational
goals.
ReflectionWhat do you anticipate to be a problem for specific students?

ELD Objective-

The students wouldnt be able to use reading comprehension

processes and fix-up strategies when experiencing with tough text (Herrell &
Jordan, 2012). The students would need to know this in order to be able to use
reading comprehension properly.
Content Objective- The students wouldnt be able to identify the strategies used to
make sense of texts (Herrell & Jordan, 2012). The strategies the students would
use could become known with more study of these strategies.

What would likely go well? Why?

The majority of the students would be able to use the strategies that they have talked
about in their discussion and apply them to their classwork and projects. They would be
able to practice these strategies more though the lessons in the classroom. Their rate of
using these strategies would remain at a constant pace with that of their classwork.
What would you like to be more sure about?

That the students can become more informed on the various strategies available to them
and how they cam be used for their educational goals. Knowing these strategies would
allow them to complete their work in a much more efficient way than without use of
these strategies. The students would be able to apply these strategies later on in college
for papers or projects. This would allow them succeed in their classes with note taking for
example.
What theory or theorists would most strongly support use of this strategy?

The direct method and proficient-oriented instruction support the use of this current
strategy. In the direct method, they reply back to the questions and give feedback on the
lesson. In the proficient-oriented method, the students would complete exercises that
have to do with grammar and listen to the explanations on the grammar. This is how
these two theories support the current strategy and its current use.
