A to Z Science

By : Crystal Jeon

A - Asteroid
A medium-sized rock
left over from the
formation of the Solar
System and also
known as planetoids.

B - Black Hole
The core of a
collapsed star and
even light cant
escape. Also its gravity
is so strong.

C - Comet
Small ball of dust and
gas which orbits the
sun, and only visible
when they are close
enough to the Sun to
start burning off their
dust/gas.

D - Dark Matter
Most of space is dark
matter. It is matter that
is too dim to be picked
up by telescopes, but
astronomers know it's
there by the influence
of its gravity.

E - Earth
The third planet from
the Sun and the only
planet in the Universe
on which life is known
to exist.

F - Flare
A sudden burst of
energy from a star, like
the Sun.These usually
occur on the Sun
around sunspots.

G - Galaxy
A huge group of star,
gas, and dust and
bound together by
gravity. The one we
are on is called Milky
Way.

H - Helium
The second most
common element in
the universe after
hydrogen and the
atmosphere of large
gas planets are made
up of hydrogen and
helium.

I - Inner Planets
A planet whose orbit
lies within the asteroid
belt, Mercury, Venus,
Earth, or Mars

J - Jupiter
Fifth planet from the
Sun and the largest
planet in the Solar
System. It is made up
mostly of hydrogen
and helium.

K - Kelvin
The SI base unit of
thermodynamic
temperature, equal in
magnitude to the
degree Celsius.

L - Lunar Eclipse
An eclipse in which the
moon appears
darkened as it passes
into the earth's shadow

M - Milky Way
The Milky Way is the
galaxy that contains
our Solar System. Its
name milky is derived
from its appearance as
a blurred glowing band
arching across the
night sky

N - Neptune
A pretty far planet of
the solar system,
eighth in order from
the sun, discovered in
1846.

O - Orion
A conspicuous
constellation, said to
represent a hunter
holding a club and
shield. It lies on the
celestial equator and
contains many bright
stars.

P - Pluto
A small planetary body
orbiting the sun,
discovered in 1930 by
Clyde Tombaugh.

Q - Quasar
A massive and
extremely remote
celestial object,
luminous exceptionally
large amounts of
energy, and typically
having a starlike image
in a telescope

R - Reflection
The throwing back by
a body or surface of
light, heat, or sound
without occupying it

S - Saturn
The sixth planet from
the sun and has flat
rings around it. It is
circled by a system of
broad.

T - Telescope
An instrument used to
view faraway objects,
such as planets and
stars, that makes them
look closer and clearer

U - Uranus
A far planet of the solar
system, seventh in
order from the sun,
discovered by William
Herschel in 1781.

V - Venus
The second planet
from the sun in the
solar system, and
often appearing in the
twilight sky as the
morning star

W - World
The earth, together
with all of its countries,
peoples, and natural
features.

X - Extra Terrestrial
A not-real or fictional
being from outer
space, especially an
intelligent one

Y - Yuri Gagarin
A Russian-Soviet pilot
and cosmonaut who is
the first human to
journey into outer
space.

Z - Zenith
The highest point
reached in the sky or
space. And the sun is
well past the zenith.
