measures short of open warfare, in particular.

the state of political hostility that existed between the Soviet bloc countries and
the US-led Western powers from 1945 to 1990.

Pre World War Two

In 1919 the US with other allied

powers invaded Russia and

assisted anti-Communist forces
during the Civil War.
Russian delegates were not
invited to attend the Versailles
conference.
Russia was not admitted to the
League of Nations.
During the 1930s Russia was
seen as a bandit nation, one
which was not to be trusted.

World War Two

In August of 1939 the USSR

established a Non-Aggression Pact

with Nazi Germany and helped the
Nazis invade and defeat Poland.

force before being attacked by
Germany in June of 1941.

powers.

the US and USSR.

Ideological Differences

no differences in wealth
religion to be the opiate of the people

Blinds people of what they should be doing

favored internationalism over nationalism/patriotism

Opposed political democracy which it believed was a tool of capitalists to oppress the
working classes.

America and most of its allies held almost totally different views.

Post World War Two (part 1)

After the war ended the most

urgent need for the alliance

was gone.
The USSR felt a need for
security and established
satellite states in Eastern
Europe.
The US wanted free trade
throughout the world. This
too the USSR saw as merely
an attempt by the US to
dominate world markets.
