HAPPENINGS
Whats New in Room 46?

MARCH
Dear Parents,
We all survived February with just
one day off due to the weather!
That was much better than last
February. March however is not
starting off too good. I certainly
hope that we will have seen the
last of snow and below freezing
temperatures after this week!!! Im
sure we are all looking forward to
spring!
It was nice meeting with all of you
at conferences. Your children are
all making such wonderful
progress. It is so rewarding to see
how far they have come.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Continue to encourage as much
reading as possible at home. It is
the single most important thing
you can do as a parent with
regards to PSSA preparation. It
would also be most beneficial to
review PSSA practice packets that
come home. I do go over all
incorrect responses with them prior

to them taking their grade home.

Additional attention to what they
had incorrect could only help.
Grammar skills I will teach this
month are irregular verbs,
pronoun-verb agreement, adverbs
that tell how, when, where and
adverbs that compare.
We will also work on the prefixes
pre, re, bi, and non.
We are continuing to perfect our
constructed responses to open
ended reading prompts. Our focus
this month will be on a response
which requires text evidence from
TWO passages.
Target reading strategies and skills
we will work on will be theme and
providing text evidence to support
the theme, summarizing, main idea
and analyzing and evaluating what
we read.
We will also revisit literal and nonliteral meanings.
Text features and text organization
will continue to be stressed when
reading non- fiction passages.
I have and will continue to
emphasize good reading strategies

along with good test taking

strategies.
We are continuing to work on
informational writing. Our focus
this month will be on opinion
writing: problem and solution
paragraphs.
We will also conclude work on a
research project we did on African
American Olympic athletes. They
used the I-pads for research and
they will create a digital story
about their athlete.
They will be producing several
creative writing pieces including a
March Sentinel newspaper and a
piece entitled The Day Larry
Leprechaun Destroyed Room 46.
THEY LOVE TO WRITE and they do
so with such ease and enjoyment!!

5inches, 5 feet, 5cm, 5 km.

They will work with real life word
problems that will require them to
use one or more operations to
solve.
After completing the measurement
unit we will start an algebra unit.
There will be a heavy concentration
of fractions, geometry and algebra
on the PSSA.
I will continue to work on open
ended math problems where they
need to explain their work in
writing.
As with reading when a math
practice packet comes home or a
test, please review incorrect
responses with your child.
Continue to review multiplication
facts.

SCIENCE

MATH
The focus this month will be a
measurement unit which will
include the following concepts: tell
or show time to the nearest
minute, elapsed time to increments
of 5 minutes, using a ruler to
measure lengths to the nearest
half inch, quarter inch or
centimeter, measuring areas by
counting unit squares, area and
perimeter(already covered, but will
review), comparing and ordering
objects in both standard and
metric forms, matching objects
with approximate measurements,
e.g., about how tall is a soda can?

We will continue our work with the

Foss Water Kit this month. We have
3 investigations to complete.
One investigation involves the
effect of surface area and air
temperature on evaporation. They
will observe condensation.
The culminating activity will be to
create their own waterwheel! They
cant wait!
Throughout the unit they have
used their scientific thinking
processes to conduct the various
experiments. They hypothesize,
observe, draw conclusions,
communicate to the group, take
notes, compare and organize their
data in their science packets.
A grade is given for this work.

SOCIAL STUDIES
The next unit of study will be an
economics unit. We will probably
start it toward the latter part of the
month. They will learn about
wants and needs supply and
demand, scarcity, goods and
services, producer and consumer,
division of labor, money, check
writing, natural resources, capital
resources, and human resources.
The culminating activity will be a
Trade Fair. There will be a letter
coming home to explain the Fair
when we move closer to having it.
