Bulletin
CNT03076 Silicon Nitride IFC Failures
*DD, *UD, *DX, *UX Furnaces
ORDER No: FURN-SVB05A-EN

DATE: December 16, 2003

The purpose of this bulletin is to advise customers of a problem associated with

Single Stage Integrated Furnace Control (IFC) CNT03076. This bulletin is to inform
the field of the failures and to describe the corrective action. Typical product
applications include the TDD, TUD, TDX, and TUX families of furnaces. The action
described in this bulletin is not, being taken to address a safety concern.

NOTICE: Warnings and Cautions appear at appropriate sections

throughout this bulletin. Read these carefully.

WARNING: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which,

if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which,
if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury.
CAUTION: May also be used to alert reader to a situation that could
result in equipment or property-only damage.
WARNING

Service checks and diagnostic procedures described in this bulletin are

intended to be performed by trained, qualified personnel. Some checks
may be required to be performed with voltage present and the hazard of
moving parts also exists in these situations. Failure to follow warnings and
cautions in this bulletin may result in personal injury or death.

Introduction
Field reports have confirmed failures on CNT03076 single-stage, SiliconNitride Integrated Furnace Controls (IFC) in certain model furnaces.
These controls are used in *DD-C, *UD-C, *DX-C, and *UX-C furnaces.
Units with "319" and earlier date codes are affected. Service Alert
FURN-SVA05A-EN no longer applies.

the models listed below. A discussion of the problem, the symptoms and
field solutions follow.

Discussion
These models have may have a problem inherent in the IFC which results
in a "reset" of the ignition sequence when the indoor blower motor tries to
start. This is due to electrical "noise" in the K1 (Fan On/Off) relay on the
IFC. We suspect this is aggravated by the performance characteristics of
one particular blower motor used in production.
The symptom: The furnace will start the ignition sequence normally,
establishing a steady flame, while waiting for the indoor blower to come
on. 45 seconds after flame is proven, the indoor blower is supposed to
come on. It is at this time the IFC may interrupt the sequence and start
over (a "reset"). This may be intermittent, or happen repeatedly. The
simplest diagnostic is to turn the "FAN" switch to the "ON" position at the
room thermostat. If the cycle continues without a "reset", the IFC is
defective, but field repair is possible. This is an early failure so it should
show up at start up or soon thereafter.

Repair Procedure
Turn the fan switch to the "ON" position at the room thermostat for a
temporary solution. For a permanent solution, order and install KIT07612
(preferred repair), or order and install a replacement IFC. All CNT03076
in inventory in the Memphis Parts Distribution Center have been
corrected.
The way to determine the corrected part is by the label on the carton. The
identifier in the lower left corner of the label will be "E5S2" (see Fig. 1).

The revision with the "S2" ("S"ervice stock revision "2") has an
additional component called a "multi-functional capacitor" (MFC)
which filters the "noise" described earlier. (fig. 2 & 3)

Install the "plug-on" multi-function capacitor (KIT07612) between the

EAC-H terminal and the XFMR-H terminal using piggy back terminals.
Instructions will ship with each KIT07612.

Factory Corrective Action

All single stage Silicon Nitride HSI model furnaces will have the MFC on
the Integrated Furnace Control beginning FW 20, 2003 (320 date codes).
