Quality Matters Rubrics Comparison: Quality Matters rubric vs.

ROI
Compare the Quality Matters rubrics to that of the ROI. How do they differ in approach
in regard to the areas and criteria each covers, the underlying assumptions, or the focus of
each? Which do you think would be more compelling or useful as a guide for faculty with
little or no online experience? Explain why.
The QMs approach is set up to cover classroom instruction between the teacher and the student,
and it focuses on the learning materials of the courses or modules for that elearning class. The
ROI is set up to cover the developmental process of online course design and delivery, and is a
rubric that self-assesses an instructors online expertise.
The ROI is used as a tool to self-evaluate, can be used as a road map to revising or developing a
new course, and faculty can be recognized for exemplary recognition from their efforts of online
course instruction.
The QM seems to examine the quantitative aspects of educational standards by assigning point
values. The ROI examines the qualitative aspects of the learning environment and its role in
providing high quality online course design and technological delivery, and how the creation of
this environment will affect the learner.
I think the ROI would be more compelling and useful as a guide for faculty with more online
experience. If an instructor is designing a course the ROI would be a rubric to use as a road map.
The QM covers all aspects of standards for teachers that are instructing an online course that
have had little or no online experience. Although, the ROI is a self-evaluation tool that advises
instructors it is set up for experienced teachers.
