building comprehension and
vocabulary.

Oral comprehension Task

Sentence cut up
Sentence 5. Isolate simple
sentences (in pairs). Cut
conjunctions.

Writing
Task 1 (easier)
Compound sentence cut and
paste.

Sentence Structure
Pairs are given 2 conjunctions.
They add their conjunctions to
the sentence and read it to each
other. Pairs will decide if the
conjunctions maintain or detract
from meaning.

Task 2 (challenging)
Create compound sentences by
choosing a coordinating
conjunction and writing a
second independent clause.

Read the first few pages of the

text, discuss each page as it is
read.

Sentence cut up.

Groups cut up the sentence,
Everyone ignored him when it
drizzled. Groups then rearrange
the sentence so it still makes
sense.
Groups record the sentence in
their book, ensuring they add or
change any punctuation. Then
share with the class.

Task: Give students a copy of

the focus passage (attached)
and a highlighter.

Extension: Groups rearrange the

sentence and add a
coordinating conjunction , and a
second independent clause to
create a compound sentence.
Record in books.

-Ask students to recall what a

simple sentence is (subject and
a predicate, i.e., subject= who,
predicate=what the who is
doing. Predicate contains a
verb.)
-Tell students the passage
contains 2 simple sentences,
ask them to highlight the
sentences that are simple.

SSP Jill is in the room for this.
We take the kids through a
video that focuses on
developing phonemic awareness
at their groups level. Ill give

Art/PD
Students have 2 different
artworks that need to be
completed.
PD Art Students have started
a collage of their face. They
were cutting out various
images/colours/textures from
magazines and pasting them to
recreate their own face
(magazines are in the
cupboards under the sink)
Opti Art We started an optical
illusion artwork on Thursday
afternoon. Most of the kids were
up to colouring the artwork.
They will need a black texta.
Hayley is the only one finished,
